OK, and what if you only use FL-studio, a microkorg and a mc-505 (for midi-control only)? You can't do much live things with a small setup... but you still want to play your music. Are you then fooling the crowd? |

I allways say... should say (live synth)
or (live what?) on the flyer....
just live is too big... and now the word live is overused.

And what about: 'press-play-live' if you don't do very much live but tweak some filters and turn some knobs (and don't ask a lot of money)? So again: my question is: what to do if you CAN'T play much live, but still want to perform (at a very (very) reasonable price, like say... for free or less than 100€)?
Almost every synthlead is rendered since I need the effects of vst's to boost up my sound. What should you do then? Play a mediocre synth with no soft-effects? Just to improve the live-aspect of it all? |

If u just do the "play" thing, it should be "live set" on the flyer (u can just play 1 cd with mix and mix recorded samples in other, or play from sequencer and play a bit (do some tweaks) with some sinth live..., or some other simple thing...)
if it is a proper live it should be "live act"
Many artists charge diferent prices for "live set" and "live act"

I dont mean to offend anyone, but i've been in many parties where the big attraction was a Live, but all i saw was a laptop, MIDI controller and in a few cases an ADAT. That is kinda disappointing, expecially for a guy like me, a real "gear freak", though i understand the logistics involved in most cases, but i have seen cases where there is no excuses. Crystal Method (maybe you dont like them)- Avalon in Boston back a few, all the Synths were unpluged, and the guys were jumping and "playing" like monkeys, while the ADAT was doing the job. I play live myself, and i try to carry with me all the stuff i need to play and keep me moving all the time, and doing something real, creating, changing all the time. i believe a little creativity and some visual impact does not hurt and helps to make the artist feel like a real artist and not a robot.
PS: All these guys still a good producers though! |

I definetly agree... That's why I adore Eat Static, Orbital and Der Dritte Raum. I try to do as much as possible live myself, but recently, my harddrive died, and the live versions and audio from my newer tracks dissapeared. I'm playing live soon, and don't have the time (or audio) to do all the stuff I want.
- But I still bring a couple of synths and leave some sounds for chance (and musicianship )

I know exactly what you are talking about This is a very annoying thing.
Most of The crowd that come to the parties doesn't know enough to see if it's a live show or not , as long as they see the artist jump on stage with a laptop infront of him and a synth that he is "playing" from time on his side.
Sometime the people don't care , many people on drugs don't really give a damn about anything and for them the people on stage is playing live no matter what ,,why , they read it on the flyer so the artist must be playing live.
From the artist side:
It's an easy way to make more money ,if i'm not wrong live show are charged higher price than t a DJ set so it's much better for the artist to go for a live show even if he don't have one.
from the party org' side:
It's much better to have a live act because this is a bigger attraction for the crowd and they can also charge higher price for writing live show on the flyer ,i don't think the party org' mind if it's a fake as long as the music played is good.
I think it's a shame , i can't stand the artists that fake and above them i can't stand the D.J who fakes , if one artist don't have live show the artist shouldn't play live .point.
Don't fake and stand there with unplugged synth just to showoff and get more money.
Artist should first of all to it for respecting themselves as a musicians.
(a bit off topic)
More then that i can't stand DJ's who stand on stage and give a big showoff while playing tracks that most of the times are not their tracks.
They fake "tweaks" with their hands and moves just like they create this tracks at the same moment ,It look like live for people who do no much in the crowd i can see many of those.
I like DJ who do their job ,mixing , putting some effects and dance on stage to be part of the atmosphere, (I.E Cosmossis , holy wisdom,,,,,respect)
I'm sorry If my words are too hard for someone i don't mean to insult or harm anyone.

one thing about playing live that makes it live is the chance to mess up & make mistakes. it adds an extra degree of energy to it, and gives the chance for the show to do some truly amzing things & create something new that won't happen again anywhere at anytime. if your faking it to a prearranged set you have no interaction with the crowd to help determine where the set should go.
i think to many bigger acts are afraid of taking that chance.
on the other hand is the sound quality issue, it is much harder to get that 'produced' sound many expect if your tracks aren't polished and premixed.
but i'll take it raw & with mistakes over a fake anyday. |
