64bit is still new and I wouldn't advice on taking a step there yet, softwarewise and hardwarewise.
You have 4GB RAM and that's great, don't feel bad if it's not fully used.

Make a kind of research in web, about 64bit compatibility of particular software and hardware you are going to use, then make conclusions...

Don't go 64bit yet. Ive done that a while ago and believe me. Softwarewise and Hardwarewise EVENTUALLY you ARE going to stumble into some sort of incompatibility.
4gb ram is helalotta ram and you shall have no difficulties for a long time.
UNLESS you are going to do a lot of heavy processing and you plan to over stress yor system.

I wish there would come a mod to Windows 2000, i loved windows 2000, with some new implemented stuff like ram usage, dual/quad core support and so on it would be a perfect platform for musiccreation-softwares.

does he use his comp for music production? cuz ive had the worst time ever. lots of crashes and freezing while stressing the system with vsts and while trying to install other software.
it might not reject EVERYTHING but the one thing it rejects might that little something that was most important.
I'd hate to re install all my gig just because of one issue and i'd hate to have to give up that one thing...
but well...

I would say go for WinXP SP3. I have experienced alot of increase in performance since I upgraded to SP3. Though I also only can utilize 3.25 GB Memory.
