Ok, so I've bought a new computer with 4GB RAM + a 512 MB RAM GFX card, and since 32 bit doesnt utilize more than 3.15 (or something) of a TOTAL amount of RAM memory, I need to upgrade my OS to a 64 bit system.

Now, does anyone have any experience with music production in a 64 bit enviroment? And if so, is Vista 64 or XP 64 the best choice in that matter?

And what about software compatibility? I know drivers has to be 64, but will there be any major issues with software applications?

64bit is still new and I wouldn't advice on taking a step there yet, softwarewise and hardwarewise.
You have 4GB RAM and that's great, don't feel bad if it's not fully used.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Make a kind of research in web, about 64bit compatibility of particular software and hardware you are going to use, then make conclusions...           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Don't go 64bit yet. Ive done that a while ago and believe me. Softwarewise and Hardwarewise EVENTUALLY you ARE going to stumble into some sort of incompatibility.

4gb ram is helalotta ram and you shall have no difficulties for a long time.

UNLESS you are going to do a lot of heavy processing and you plan to over stress yor system.

I wish there would come a mod to Windows 2000, i loved windows 2000, with some new implemented stuff like ram usage, dual/quad core support and so on it would be a perfect platform for musiccreation-softwares.

does he use his comp for music production? cuz ive had the worst time ever. lots of crashes and freezing while stressing the system with vsts and while trying to install other software.
it might not reject EVERYTHING but the one thing it rejects might that little something that was most important.

I'd hate to re install all my gig just because of one issue and i'd hate to have to give up that one thing...

but well...           Jesus loves you...

I would say go for WinXP SP3. I have experienced alot of increase in performance since I upgraded to SP3. Though I also only can utilize 3.25 GB Memory.           www.xun.dk / myspace.com/xundk

SP3 has been tested over and over again, and its indeed full of flaws and setbacks and it supposedly adds some configuration which slows the system down a bit.

Im gonna go with Win2k3, since its basically a XP, only with better possibilities. I can use all my system memory, and even add alot more later on. It also runs faster and more stable, according both to benchmark tests, but also pretty much all the user reviews I've been able to dig up.

Thx anyway, guys           http://www.facebook.com/nasa.tranceproject
