I would love a 17" notebook for the extra realestate..
acording to a phone call I had from a tech;
HP is to be avoided period even though some have a TI!; apparently ASUS (avoiding VIA) is ok; MSI !?; and Toshibas are the only go.. errr |

The right way to go is actually look for a 6 pin firewire port in your laptop. Solves you maaaany, maaaany problems, especially the instability in connection of fw. They are rare to find, but if you do, you will be awarded for the rest of you life

Vaio have 6 pin firewire?
I was only aware that apple had them. I always assumed it was a licensing thing, since they were an early supporter of the firewire standard. I wish other pc laptops had 6 pin firewire, as I would never buy a viao.

What's the thing with a TI?
I have a Via FW on my desktop motherboard (DFI motherboard) and it works perfectly. AFAIK, Nec is the one making problems.
And my interface has a DC input in case I connect it to a 4pin connection.

I did some research a while ago, and the only PC's with 6-pin FW I came across was some of the Acer Ferraris (1000 and 1004 models at least).
Apart from the horrible look I'm not sure they have a screen in the size you want though, and I don't know what chipset they use.
But there might be some more models than the ones I come across.
Best bet is maybe to give Acer a call and see if they can find out for you what models they have with 6-pin as well as what chipset they use.
@MikeA
There has been plenty of problems with for example the Rioch chipset that seems to be the most common on laptops nowadays.
Bus power is very nice when you connecting up in the middle of a party in the dark and completely spaced out on drugs.
But the main issue with 4-pin is that they just suck as connections.
It's not a question of if they will start acting up but when, so for live use it's really not an option.

I gave my interface to a friend of mine who has a Dell Vostro and it worked great on his 4pin FW. So I guess the Dell Vostro series are fine.
And if the problem is with Ricoh, why is everyone looking for TI? Look for not-Ricoh. Would seem much easier to me. |

I'm just saying it's not the only one. The Via chipset on my motherboard works great, and whatever my friend has on his Dell works great as well.
Actually the same friend has a TI fw on his desktop computer and the interface didn't work there. So to be honest, I have no idea.
