Ok, going back now to what matters,

I've tried the m-audio (just for listening, not producing) and first I have to say they are much smaller speakers than the Alesis, and as I said before I need to "feel" the power of the music, so they wouldn't be my choice (although they are suprinsigly powerfull for their size, I must say)

Also, if I talk about prices, yes, m-audio is more expensive, but Alesis is a standard for many studios and the amount of Alesis speakers sold is incomparable with m-audio, wich makes production costs and everything cheaper. Also, Alesis are older, if you check it, they costed twice the price when they where released, much more than m-audio.

But anyway, always have a listen before you choose if you can, monitors are quite a personal thing.

If you looking for monitors, u should check out Fostex pm-2, active speakers with killer sound for the price.

I didn't mean they are more expensive then M-Audio. I meant they're more expensive sompared to the alesis monitor one mk2

KRK.

I bought these guys a couple months ago; experienced the same problem not being able to hear the frequencies properly; then when I got into a different hifi deck, the sound was completely different.

I went to Guitar Center on one of those crazy big sale days, and made the guys there A-B the entire wall of sound there.

I listened to everything! Yamaha, Alesis, Genelec, but I played in mystery fashion: they made a switch on the downbeat (thanks Nir!) and I had to pick which speakers were playing.

I'll tell ya, when they turned on the KRK speakers, I could not position them at all; the sound filled the room (the soundproofed one) and as far as the big mastering setup went they compared the Large KRK set (Don't remember the model) with the Genelec variety of the same size. I was very impressed, I now am using the small set here at my "studio"

KRK speakers are made of Kevlar and they have no compressors or other devices that will get between the audio output of the card and your ears. I like this since you hear best what is on the screen. The downside is that many of them blow out since there is nothing protecting the circuit.

If you don't get KRK speakers, at least make sure your setup is powered: this way you don't have to match the amp to the speakers.

A sub is rather important also, but you shouldn't need a big one. It is mainly for being able to hear.

Good fortune to you and make sure a Monster Power Conditioner is in the mix for your studio upgrade. It is next on mine after the syncraid (www.syncraid.com)
