This is my first post here, so, hello you people!
I'm producing music since three years now, just for fun, like everyone else I guess . I never really had time in the past to make seriously music, but now that i have I'd like upgrade my equippment. I'm working with an RME digi 96/8 pst, access virus c (before i had a supernova 2), mackie 1402-vlz pro mixer and an AMD pc (asus a7n8x deluxe, 40gig hd, kingston 512 ram. Everything just works fine. But the sound just isn't "fat" enough. I have some very cheap monitor and amplifier from sony. What would you buy first? New monitors? New amplifier? Equalizer or Compressor? I'm a little bit confused and really would appreciate your support. thanks |

I suspect my answer would be Monitors.
but that depends what you really need and if you are satisfied with ur currrent speakers.

hehehe (i luv this icon hehehehe)
buy a new set of speakers,
like the yamaha ns-10
for best results with mastering
hm...
besides that buy cubase ( or hm... hm... get it heheh)
mastering will make ur tracks have a phat sound !
and with the ns-10 u could get the best results and ur tracks will be sweeeeeet
btw : i just recomend on ns-10 because thats what i used in the studio i worked in

I wouldn't go for the NS10....
Check active monitors (self amplified) like Alesis MKII, Samson, M-audio, and quite some more (these are the "budget" ones....)
If you want to go for something more really pro check the mackie and dynaudio and brands like that.... |

I've got alesis MKII and I'm quite happy with them, was just a matter of getting used to them and finding a good position for them.
I have also worked with Berhinger Trust and they where ok also, lots of artists working with them also.
Both these two are considered budget...
The NS10 are nice reference monitors, specially to make sure that the sound will sound ok in small hi-fi systems or tvs, but studios with them will also have other pairs of more powerfull speakers to put the "power" into the sound...At least is what I've always heard from them...Not from personal experience I must say...But at least me, I need more power, I need to "feel" what I'm doing |

well, if they are the same than why are the active ones always about 150-200 euro more expensive? do they sound that better? |

The active ones cost more because they are "active"!
That means they are self amplified, no need for amplifier
Actually, they are bi-amplified, each speaker has an amplifier for highs and one for lows
Also, the amplified ones have the bass holes in the front, makes bass quite more clear I think; the passive ones have in the back. |
