In the webchat that inthemix recently held with The Crystal Method one of the hot topics of conversation with the American electronic act was their decision to tour Australia playing DJ sets, as opposed to the full blown live affair most would have come to expect.

The duo revealed that, in their case, the decision to do a DJ tour rather than play live came down purely to cost. Ken and Scott stating that the price for transporting their 4 thousand pounds worth of equipment was going to be in excess of US$80,000 - definitely
a high price to pay!

Often it’s assumed that live acts who tour as DJs are simply ‘copping out’ and taking the easy route, happy to carry around a few record boxes rather than lug keyboards, samplers, and the myriad of other equipment needed for their live shows from city to city.

Learning that it was going to cost upwards of $110,000 (Australian dollars) to tour The Crystal Method live, it certainly changed by opinion of what goes into touring a full blown electronic live act. Can you imagine the premium on tickets that would have been added to shows around the country had the duo toured live?

What are your thoughts on live acts who tour as DJs? Are they taking the easy way out, or are you content to see them do their stuff behind the decks?

Comments??

I can understand the problem & expense of flying out gear (although I'm quite surpised at the price) - but there must be ways round it which maybe the more technical on the board can tell us more about - although i suppose the easy & time honoured option is just to take DAT along & mime to it...

But I dont see the point of booking someone as a DJ who is known for their production skills- why not book a good DJ? Personally i think the amount of live acts booked as Djs is partly responsible for the very mediocre quality of a lot of psy trance DJing.. but I'll leave that rant for another day..

I have been writing using just my laptop, sound interface and a controller after years of using hardware synths & outboard (due to recent quality improvements in software, and pretty soon thats all I will be using live, Is that a cop out if thats all that was actually used to write the music? I wonder?

(It certainatley makes travelling to do live and writing wherever I am easier)
