For me, the psychedelic experience is about repetition, fading off into infinity. Subtle details shifting and changing while the patterns repeat and repeat. Sounds merge and twist. They melt into each other and then pull themselves apart.

I guess that translates into lots of delays, reverbs, and filters

i think psy is about messing with your brain

sounds that are hipnotic, resonant and ever changing lead to confusion and disorientation

the beggining of acid was simple saw and square sounds filteres with loads of resonance

when the cutoff was tweaked the timbre changed and the brain felt it was the same sound and note but at a different timbre

our brain tend to adapt to whats it's listening

if what's begin listened to changes it gives the send of psychedelia

then there's also the energy of octave changes, fast rithms, etc...

it makes people tunne in

i think

the tempo is very important too... everything between roughly 100 and 200 bpm will have a hypnotic effect... this is called frequency following syndrome, and the effect gets reinforced by (meth)amphetamines, thats why they work so differently with music than without music (by all means, i do NOT want to suggest that you should take this stuff to enjoy the music, frequency following syndrome works just as well without it too, u just have to give in to the feeling yourself, instead of letting the drugs do it, and u WILL get in trance drugfree)... i have to admit that i noticed the fact that you can go in trance without amphetamines only after i stopped using them

Yes very true but trance is different thing than psychedelic.

U can get in trance by many ways, dancing, working, by meditation, by special breathing techniques.

Psychedelic is a way things seen/heard/smelled or feeled by urself. The same thing can be perceived in different ways by ur mind.            Signature

in that case, i don't have a clue as to what 'psychedelic' really means... I think it can be different for anyone...

psychedelia moves your body and your mind.. defenitly cause the sounds in it.. i cant go in trance with xiringuito... whatever it is...
the fx play a important part as well.
For me the most important thing is to creat a visual music wich can make you see and feel what you're listening..
The moist important thing is that everything depends on individual perception... so thats why somany ppl go intrance with xiringuito or techno...
or any other music gener. but psychedelik needs to interact with your brain in order to be psy. its not like drinking water, that you almost dont notice. for me its something that stays in your mind, creating images and feelings in response to that sound coming in thatmoment so there is difrent stages of psychedelik mind stage..

Excellent!!! I would like to keep this thread going and get more feedback. I agree that the term psychedelic can be very subjective, but it is also a term that most of us find difficult to describe with words. My main objective with this thread is to drive home the point that any sound can be made to be psychedelic. It depends on how you change the sound. You can take some of the most obnoxious sounds and make it really trippy, to where you don't really know what the sound is, but you know it will stay in your head because it is unique. My advice to any producer is to take one of the sounds that you really dislike, and make it so trippy that you don't even know what the hell it is anymore. When you wake up sometime later and that sound is still stuck in your head, that's when you know it is psychedelic.... I would hope that all of the artists whether you are released or not, strive to create sounds that defy verbal definition.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Psychedelic music is IMO something which:

Moves your soul
Moves your body
Moves your mind,

It creates both fear and ecstacy (no reference to aforementioned amphetamines)

It is both a powerful force and a emotional force...

Yet in my experience many people don't understand it to the same degree as us who both create the music and listen to it all the time.

Some people just don't like our music, and can't see past the sounds...

Maybe what makes something psychedelic isn't just how the sound is made,
But how the sound is interpreted by the brain.

Everyone has a different brain and experiences things differently:
Maybe we just have a stronger tendency towards psychedelia, but we all still interpret the psychedelic sounds in different ways.

I've started reading a book about mixing yesterday and when i got to the chapter about imaging i couldn't stop thinking that's were most of the psy stuff resides: making the listener believe sound is above him, below him, to the left to the right, at the center, behing the speacke, in front of the speacker, etc.

Also, most of ALL audio production is triggering imagination on the listener... like when you make a relatively simple bass line (like in full on) sound like it's a massive one.

Thinks like octave changes transmit energy, and other intervals transmit other emotions, like thirds and fifths.

Also, some freqs are believed to touch people in diferent ways, like the legendary 47Hz bass sound so used in many dance music stuff.

There's also something about sounds that don't belong to nature that twikles our mind...

There's so much to say about this topic, that we really should keep it going in this thread. We might find something usefull for us.

Definitely agree -
When Organic sounds are twisted, and completely unnatural sounds are created and moved it is a true psychedelic experience!

Keep this thread going for sure! - it will eventually i think help us producers to create better music

bumping it up

seems we all agree at one thing, psychedelia is really interpreted differently by each individual. and it cannot be described very well with words...

i was trying to think about what sounds give me this "psychedelic feeling". apart from the common 'filter' modulation and the use of layers of sounds (that help put you in a state of trance), generally it's the - weird sounds, that have a large taste of the unexpected, being too complicated to understand when being sober - sounds that i personally percieve as psychedelic.

maybe that explains why most of the music coming out nowadays is not so psychedelic any more. cos it lacks the originality it used to have and it's not that surprising any more (of course there are exceptions).

good thread           .
Respect is earned, not demanded...
