What makes a sound psychedelic???

All of us in here can tell if something sounds psychedelic or not. The tools that we use for music creation can be used for pretty much every genre. What is it about the process that we use that makes a sound psychedelic?
One of the big things that I have noticed about the sounds used in psychedelic trance that differs to many other genres of electronic music is how a sound changes over a period of time. Generally there is something that happens to a sound that makes it sound different from what it sounded like at it's onset. This can be acomplished through filters or delays, or other miscellaneous effects like that.
What else do think makes a sound psychedelic or trippy??

when it comes to psychedelic sounds, i think of methamorphing and spacial sounds. like something u can hear but not really know where is the origin of that sound. the timbre is very important, has to be something completely unespected.

Good question.
I personally think it has to do with the detail of the sound...
A psychedelic lead will never have the same sound being repeated over and over again; it is changed and detailed (unlike a tune like Faithless - Insomnia for example).
A good example of a pretty standard sound being made more psy i think is in Let Loose by Exaile - the very percussive xylophony sound:
instead of just being:
di da - di da da
It changes to a things like
DI di DA da... digidrrigidada
haha  hope you get what i mean!
If the sound is not manipulated in some way then its the original complexity of the sound and how it relates to rest of the piece of music - i can't describe it but you must know what i mean - you can hear it in tunes like Crying Comet by Pop Stream
the sound which comes in before the kick kicks in. Wiaoi owiioo uuwa o wiio
even though the sound stays relatively the same - its the what the sound sounds like in the first place that makes it bouncy and trippy
also panning, effects etc.
The super high production values and tightness of sounds.
and most importantly the groove and story:
Psy is far far far more deep and introverted than your average music; particularly that fucking pop/eurotrance shit...!

Well...a very interesting topic...I think any sort of sound can be psychedelic...of course there are those noises that just get to the back of your head but then there some normal noises that can get you as well...a few examples....my friend ben and i were dicussing this and he was explaining how h ehad done some acid and was lying at the back of a dingy club listening to a punk rock band...he said it was the most mind bending sound to hear..relentless guitars and noise...then there is the sound that has got me on many occasion on a mission across london after a party...the tube...very wierd sounds occur down there... back to bands hawkwind the old school psy band...they managed it wit guitars and old synths in the 70s...i sware i had a session listeing to the and man i suddenly got it...good shit...anyway i could go on but i'll end up boring the shit outta ya! The stereo field is the best effect invented...peace and may this thread prevail. |

Acid  and of course the other psy drugs.
But mostly our mind, psy Li Yun said it already, any sound is psychedelic.
NikC for me Faithless-Insomnia is a very psychedelic track.
If u are on acid (u don't need to be, but i think it is the best way to get the clue what psychedelic is) u see the whole world around u in another way. U see that the simplest think can touch ur mind and can give u great pleasure.

on my opinion, the sound is psychedelic because the audience wants and expect it to be so,
also, the combination of those samples wich make's your bodey move almost immediatly hhahahahahah.

if u get in trance, it's psychedelic... that means that all drums are psychedelic for example... i don't think u can describe what makes a sound psychedelic... Perhaps in very scientific terms (like... this causes those brainwaves and so on...), but all the rest is subjective bullcrap |

it's all back to relativity theory, i think all of you are right depend or relative to your experience and experiments. for me psychedelic sound is everything that i can not hear or expect in a normal everyday cociousness, but again all depends. substance could be but not always the star-gate to a psychedelic experience (sound in this case could be made up in a melting like, diagram or hologram like, layers or spinning, explotion or implotion, etc). for me exp i can not lie to my eyes (vision). so time and space condition is the factor of all. as wavelogic says, its a state of mind. so ubnormal stage of mind usualy take and give psychedelic fx

how you play it and effects make it psychedelic i think , with effects all sound can be but the most important it s the state of mind , i mean even with a guitar you can do psy sounds if you undersatnd the psychedelic things , look at all the seventies psy music . |

Yes right, remeber the times without computers and synthesisers. There is a lot psychedelic instrumental music.
What u play is also important, for example listen to Cat Stevens. Few instruments can express big stuff.

the word "psychedelic trance" means only to the trance section.
i think that the reason for this is the use of psy drugs that makes you think and listen in other way.
personally, i dont use or used psy drugs so i cant tell you how it's feel with the trance, but i see the peoples that comes to the parties i played in and i can see hoe the react to the music.
there is another thing ,
those psy drug's peoples (wich i love them hahahahaha, in hebrew they call "satlanim") say that they hear some samples wich not in the track, so, if you are a producer, you put thos thing's they hear in the track so you can hear it hahahahahahahahahahaha.
so,
think psychedelic it's will be psychedelic!!!!!!

if artist have this soul he will know what knob to tweak to make it sound psychedelic
and yes ppl that never tried psychedelic drugs dont have a clue of what psychedelic sound is
all they can do is guess and try to copy from some artist that do know
