what kind of preamp do you run your synths through?

Hey guys,

I was wondering what kind of preamps if any you run your synths through. I generally run whatever the piece may be through a passive DI to mic level then punch into a nice colorful preamp. I was skeptical at first but after running my XS through a 1073 clone there were frequencies and little nib-lets that were not audible when run straight to the converter.

I have used Vintechx73i and A designs REDDI (which is an active DI and does not require preamp).

any peep out there doing this? what do you use in your chain?

peace

i find preamp overpriced compared to eq, often it use same input /output stage as the preamp when using same brand and boosting the highs and the low can sound great. but preamp are nice too . i used some clone too, i love the nevish color, from the stuff i used so far what i like the most is the neve color i would like a chanel with pre/eq and culture vulture , tubes work great too

I have the culture vulture and it is great for drums and loops. I find that the nord2x sounds metallic through it but analog synths just sound monster.

when used through the x73i the nord is money.. it just does not work well through the culture vulture IMHO it takes away that bite that allows the nord to sit so well in the mix. The EL fatso is another piece that helps warm up the VA synths. The UBK version has better comp setting that the original. but very pricey. so goes the like of a gear monkey..

i actually push it as hard as i can. the trick is to have a passive attenuator like the A designs Atty or ATT2'd between the CV and your converter that way you can push it to the edge thats where the magic is. then run into your converter with out fear of clipping.

yeah i have a pad on my converters - 20 db, do you psuh it even more?what do you mean with pushing it as hard as you can? you push the output knob to max???
i have the low end that crap out on bass heavy kicks when i push it too much, but i love the thickness it give to some synths .

triode is my fav saturation and you?i find it give really nice transients
i think you like to push it so you have the transformer saturation on top, i like when there is not much low end in the source, with stuff like 808 kick it crap out here, but i dont know from what it s coming from, maybe my interface headroom, even if it dont clip with the built in pad maybe it can handle that much juice.

^^^the pad is always down and i dont push the vulture...i use it at his unity gain usually what comin in same as what go out but this unit is hot!, i m gonna give it a try with pading more the signal

what i would love is to have the Carnhill or st yves Transformers for that thick low and creamy sound like on the neve stuff on the output of my culture vulture ,damn that would sound amazing, i m not sure it s possible..i will ask the guys at thermionic one day..

the EQ is good for broad strokes but in general every synth I put through is sounds great. I have been searching for that surgical EQ but they are so expensive in hardware form like the GML8200 which is the holy grail.

one that is very versatil but maybe not chirugcal enought for your needs is the tonelux equalux, it s made by a guy who worked and designed some api gears like the 2500 comp, with tonelux he improved all the designs, it s a bit cleaner and faster than api for modern sound(with this i m not sure to like it, but for mastering it could be good except it s not steped, it s on my try list), you can even do pultec kind of boost on it,and it have good low and highs sounding boost, i think it could be a good eq to use on individual track and buss, i trust 100% the guy who recomended it to me i doubt it s bad just afraid its too close from a plugin eq, but he told me no way..i used the api 5500 and find it already not very colored, or not colored the way that give me smiles,it s even cleaner but sound faster

right now, the preamps on my behringer ada8000. not the best choice in the world. but not as bad as one might think and it goes straight to digital after that so it stays pretty tight and clean mostly.

would love a really quality pre-amp.
