Just throwing some words to get different insights to this.
Beside the talent and dedication one need to become THAT good, there are other important aspects that would make you or break you.
Producing music in general requires lots of time, and if this time is not readily or enough available, which i.e. must be invested to make a living (work for money), this would be from music production point of view very counterproductive.
For people who didn't inherited piles of money or don't have a rich daddy, the time would be a real problem.
You certainly know howlong it would take to produce a single good track. How far would you realy go, and howmuch sacrifies would you make to make it work. living on trance music production would be close to impossible, since the sales rate is -8% and decreasing.
One certainly would need at least couple of years to reach the mainstream level, once one would be well known than one could live on it by touring and performing, but what about before you get to that point?? Does one need a sponsor to be able to learn and practice on fulltime basis, with the vage hope of making it or not?
Just to spark some replies.
Thanks

This is like asking " What point is there to become rock musician " or jazz , etc.
music is one of the least financial buisnesses there R...u think trance musician has trouble? try making a living with a rock band...hehe...ods are much less that you will succeed.
in short, what you need is much luck, much
love, and much discipline....otherwise go become high-tech worker, money is much better

I think the answer is : sleep less. That's what I do. If you put a time limit on when you want to succeed then... that's just rushing! You got to take your time with such things. Hell I work on my tunes anywhere between 2-18 hours a day, pretty much 1 - 7 days a week. I've been producing music for about 2 years, some would say it sounds quite professional. Do I care? Hell no. I just like making music. I also don't want to sell loads of records. I just want to know that when someone is hearing one of my tunes, I'm playing it to them and my intention is to make the greatest music known to man. Kind of like being a really hot chick who dies a virgin.
When I was younger I really wanted to be in a band and see the world. The reality is mainstream touring artists don't really have the time on their hectic schedule to really experience true culture as they only have a couple of days tops in any one city . They are also more celebrities than musicians. As I got older, music became less of a gimmick art and more of a soulful way of life from which I built my own belief system. I don't want to sell my beliefs. I just want to believe in them.
It's cheap to make trance, so it doesnt require vast earnings and you don't need to book a studio.
If you wanna make money, don't make trance. Invest in something
You may find that a lot a psy producers who are making the $'s branch out into mastering, producing and mixing for others as well as teaching, graphic design etc. Many of them will also play for free (or expenses).
As for sales and such I think the top selling trance album was (I havent researched this) was Hallucinogen's "Twisted" With around 50,000 copies. That aint a lot in the big scheme of things. And ten years later we have this thing called broadband aka "You better be something pretty special Mr Big time producer man... or ya fucked" |

Hey Liquid,
nobody claimed that anything should happen by itself, as I know first hand what it takes to reach THAT ground as a I have done it in my academic carrier.
It would make me happy to win millions in Lottery, but not necessary to become a top producer without working hard. I think you got a misconception what I am talking about. I am definitely not a lazy ass.
I'd like to know howmuch financial and social sacrifies you would bring to achieve this goal. I read somewhere that a trance producer quitt his lawschool in order to produce music. I myself stalled my carrier after my uni graduation to find more time for music. Even , as I could have my own business, I am working as associate for someone else, in order to not to be bothered about management and have more time.
Some might go to more extremes for his/her goal, some less.
I'd like to know about you guys how to combine live with music making to maybe learn from eachother or ease eachothers hardships.

Sleep less is not a healthy advice but it is a true sacrifice.
You really need to suffer a bit in order to get things moving, if its too easy, something is not quite right.
Remember, that most of the working musicians, DO SLEEP LESS....touring, partying, composing, studio.....
It is a real thing.

Oh will it, really? (winning in Lottery). Maybe we understand happiness in different terms :)
U are proud to be a hard-worker, no problem, i didn't mean any offence ;) But what are u exactly working hard for? Becoming a world famous producer? What for, again?
The glory seems to me a doubtful goal, that's what i wanted to tell you.
Producing psychedelic trance music as self-development - the first reason to do it, that's how i see it. If u r able to look in this way, the questions of hardships will dissappear.
... everything happens by itself, u just have a right to choose, not to influence on the result :) |

If you want to be THAT good, you have to (IMO) stop focusing on getting THAT good and just go with your own rythm, be creative when it comes to you. And learn to put it on hold, when theres too many things flying around inside you.
I sometimes work at night (Eldercare) and always bring my laptop (5 years old with win98) and read tutorials and music basics. Then I find myself inspired and full of ideas, when I come home, and the next day I have the energy to sit down and get cracking...
If you focus on being as someone else, u will never be THAT good, cause you are not yourself.

Seriously I find it way easier to come up with something good and follow through with it when I'm sleep deprived... then I get a good nights sleep and fix the mix |
