There's no need to compare it to 'traditional' music - no one in their right mind is going to say that you can do 100% live psytrance.

However - it is still very possible to play an instrument or use your software/hardware as an instrument in a live manner.

Check out videos of OOOD live. Or cosmosis. or psylab. or dissolve.

actual.fucking.instruments!

Note that a computer becomes, to me at least, an 'actual fucking instrument' when you have a large degree of control over it and you can creatively use it in the moment as a sound creation tool. Tom Cosm would be a great example of this...the way he manipulates ableton is just as impressive to me as someone who rips out a sweet guitar riff.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

As PoM said Renoise is super stable, Ive only crashed it maybe 4 or 5 times in the entire 8 years Ive been working with it. Compared to Ableton which I crash 5 times just choosing which VSTs to use Ive seen some videos of Renoise live sets that blew my mind... Though I havent found a way to do what I do in Live, matching the tempos of loops and whatnot, in Renoise, and a majority of ideas Ive read on the Renoise forum involve bouncing back and forth between 2 instances much like a dj set. Theres lots of people working on the idea though, so perhaps very soon there will be a much more efficient method... Til then Ill be using Live, with obligatory Renoise rewire.

hey mate i would feel more like breaking full tunes into pattern and audio tracks and use renoise like a hardware sequenceur, trigering pattern and audio tracks during the live, what do you think?i dont know renoise enought to see the pro/cons,in fact i can see lot of pros but not much cons to me renoise look like is the ticket for a live like this.

that sounds like it would be better than the awkward bouncing-between-instances. Worth trying! Its easy as hell to render-to-sample anything in Renoise, and even render-to-instrument vsti's (makes it easy to share projects as well as port to other OSs). I might have to give it a shot just to see how it would fit with my purposes, at the least I guarantee it to run much faster than Live.           .

yes breaking a tune into at least 20 or 30 patterns ,and then break some of these patterns to have some audio track to triger in real time (that are muted by defeault) and in some you can keep a midi synth line to modulate in real time..
when doing this in the past i rememeber beeing often very surprised , going to patteren 3 to pattern 12 insteed of 4 can sound awesome for example... the live like this need some practicing but it open many way, trigering sample ... modulating some midi synth line...and changing the progression of the track as you want it.

something i don t like much in some live is that their are playing some stuff on top of a tune. everyhting should feel like its part of the tune imo or it sound weird, it s so much about getting everyhting perfect in the studio, all the automation the levels.., that there is no room for playing some random stuff on top of a tune...it often dont sound like it s part of it and it can sound worst.a live should be practiced a lot to avoid this imo.

I used to do something liek that with Live, outputting tracks as both individual patterns and individual channels and bouncing around. I see no reason that Renoise couldn't do the same thing.

If I remember right, the VSTi called 'xtal' which is mainly intended to be a dj mixing utility, auto-syncs files to the host bpm, which is the only thing that I don't know how to do with Renoise, or even if Renoise can do. The alternative I guess would be changing the bpm of your tracks before outputting, but that can be a pain, if you have Renoise's native Delay on anything, you'll have to press the 'set' button again to re-sync it, that is if you want it synced .

My own live setup is geared more towards improv and creating something never before heard, on the spot, as much as possible, rather than playing live versions of my own tracks. I like to play full tracks too, but usually just as they are without breaking em up, which gives me time to make new MIDI sequences, choose loops, tweak the bass, and whatnot.

As I said, Im still getting a handle on the improv aspect, still working on timing and whatnot, still figuring out if its even something that will end up sounding halfway decent. I may end up just scrapping the whole idea, or completely overhauling it, i dont know yet... So far though Im having fun           .
