Some synthesis technologies that come to mind.
Substractive Analogue
Fm
Physical modeling
Additive
Wavetable
Granular
Phase modeling.
My favorites are FM, Physical modelling and Native Instruments Massive engine, I don't know what it's name is but it simply rocks.
FM because of it's power, it can take a while to build a sound with it, but you have control over so many parameters, that is unbeatable, besides is one of the technologies that resembles the most how sound is naturally generated.
Massive because of all the interesting ways it gives you to model the sound, you can get some pretty different harmonics with it than with a classic analogic synth.
Physical modeling because the quality of timbres you can obtain with it is uncomparable and if you do some clever automation the sound transform itself beautifully over time

Variety is good I think. A lot more option have come about of recent with computers becoming more powerful. I think audio editing could be included as a technique as well. What do you do your physical modeling with? I used to have a Nord Modular. Kind of regret selling it now. I like some of the Reaktor granular ensembles. Nice contrast to some classic analogue subtractive.
I would love to hear some of your examples of FM and physical modeling with automation.
Oh and lets not forget Sample & Synthesis. I been getting some nice effects with loop points in Kontakt2.

Hi Psytracked
for physical modeling I use sculpture, and I agree audio editing could be a technique as well.
concerning the samples
send me a PM with your msn and we can get in touch

modular.... all styles in any combination you can think of
physical modelling is a bit boring even though the name sounds all cool.... its a ton of math for a little mallet or a piano sound

Romplers are PCM or sample based
1) subtractive analog for its simplicity, this would include modular for me
2) FM
3) additive/formant/granular
4) wavetable
5) physical modeling instead of samples where possible

1) Modular (more the virual type for me though ie. Flexor, G2, Reaktor)
2) Wavetable (great sounds ie. Waldorf synths)
3) The rest...
I don't use ideas. Every time I have an idea it's too limiting, and usually turns out to be a disappointment. But I haven't run out of curiosity. -RR |
