I got a Joe Meek SC2 stereo compressor. It uses an optical circuit instead of valves. Simple to use, By messing around with the the controls it's easy to get it to pump quite heavily (but musically) on any rythmic sounding pattern, e.g. drums, bass, synths, etc, in a submix or on the main mix. Not that expensive (£650 on ebay)

You don't need more than one good h/w comp if you have multitrack + midi setup because you can re-use the same compressor on all instruments and main mix if you want.

I have about 6 hardware compressors in my studio (One of them has the "BASS EXPAND" knob just like Colin' s and frankly I don't use any of them for compressing kick+bass. They are hardwired to the outputs of my synths so that gets processed before recording but if I didn't have them, I wouldn't worry about it one bit.

I think that below 2000$ there is nothing in hardware that a software compressor can't do (albeit combined with some other plugs). Above the 2000$ mark there are some very interesting offerings.

One of my recent favorites is the Smart C2.
