If this is for a DAW, I'd recommend a desktop computer. It will give you more power for the money, you can customize it, and it's a lot more convenient (mouse, input, screens, etc).
If you need it for performing, I can only say that my PC laptop works perfectly. It's not an i5, but it's an Intel Core 2 Duo. I get really low latency, running on a 64 bit Windows 7. Didn't do any optimizations.

got this a couple weeks ago:

ASUS i5 - couldn't be more happy with it. Replaced my core 2 duo desktop and also doubles as my live/dj laptop. It's fantastic - for the studio I have my keyboard/mouse plugged into my monitor, so when I'm in the studio I just put the laptop behind that...really convenient for me to only have one computer
I was thinking about spending less on a laptop and spending a bit more on a desktop system I assemble myself....but tbh this laptop is more than enough power for production, so I felt like I could skip the super-desktop and buy more synths instead
