Because if I bought all the music I have, I wouldn't be able to:
a) afford my dj equipment that I bought for people to use at parties
b) pay for any parties I throw (pay for the money lost on the party to be more specific  )
c) go to as many parties as I do
So I'm either giving an artist a few dollars or I'm aiding/throwing parties that reach a crowd. Not too tough of a choice there imo.
I do buy some cds, but it has to be something good or by an artist I really like. I usually only find 1 track per cd that I would use in a dj set anyway so it's not like I would buy any of the cds I download anyway.

My only excuse is to experiment with and discover different styles of music which if i like a lot i buy them original.
For example recently i was downloading some very old rock and metal music from bands like The Sweet, Judas Priest, Motorhead and more and some albums that i very much liked i bought them original for extremely low prices like 5-6 euros each.If i didnt download them for free first then i doubt i would just buy those albums with no preview listening since i am not a hardcore rock/metal fan.
In a few words mp3's are for me a preview music tool and nothing more than that.

Exactly!!! I do not listen music, from my own pleasure, from computer...
BTW, I would like to say that those virtual pirate way of sharing music is on the other hand very cool thing. Why? I finally can buy original CD without afraid that I buy true carbon of home printed version of CD like in old good times

cool, thanks to all who responded. I'm not judging you, I promise, I'm just genuinely interested as to why people do this.
Some good thoughts and discussions.
My only thing to say is that in our scene Saikosounds has 2-4 minutes samples of all releases, which is plenty to judge on, and most labels and artists have a myspace where you can listen to full tracks.

Yea You right, but whole track with closer to full quality is much more relevant for preview then low quality from saikosounds and myspace or other streamer.

Buy some copy some... Its been like this for all my life.. before we were copying music casettes and taping radio...
Not to talk about all computer software and games Who doesnt copy software ? Many (most?) artists also just get a cracked version of their favourite music program.. Same with grafix - Download photoshop and off u go....
We need to promote a way in the middle, make it easy and fun to buy/download.... Not telling people to make exuses to why they download...

well, its kinda crazy but i dont feel guilty to download mp3. its not only in psytrance, i just dont buy cds anymore
i really try to give my suport to the artists and labels i like going to parties where they play
i dont have much money to buy cds, and if i do that i could only buy one or two. Downloading mp3 you can have a general view what is beeing released in the scene and choose what you like.
It seems some people make the same thing (use mp3 as a preview) and then choose to show theyr support buying the cds or going to the parties (or both). Thats something to think about without prejudice, the bad and good sides of doing those options, and maybe theres no easy answer.
of course you could say "with the money you go to festivals you could buy some cds". Its true but again i could only buy one or two. In a festival i can see many artists from different labels and paying the ticket i am supporting theyr work.
A big problem is when the artists you like dont come to your country and you just cant show your support to them.
Like many forest/suomi/goa or thing like psy-harmonics rarely come here. I would be the first on the door.
But there are always a solution. And i guess thats the moment to find creative solutions.
There is a popular artist here that when you pay to get in the show you get a code, and then with the code you can dowload his stuff on his site. Thats just one idea.
Other example is hommega label, althought i dont like theyr style, making "hommega parties" here. Theyr public in brasil is huge and probably would never buy a cd. I guess they had to adjust themselves to this situation

Ever thought that the owners of most labels are not artists/djs and that they also dont handle their artists bookings which means that they dont make money from playing in parties or having their artists playing in parties which means the only way to show your support to them is buying their releases in their original form?
You go to the parties mate so that YOU can have fun and not to support any artists or any labels.

sorry but i didnt get your point
the artist is paid by the live (the promoter pays him)
and the public pays the ticket that makes the party happens
without a public paying tickets there would be no partys, and artists wouldnt get paid to do lives
so in the end the public audince ina party supoorts the scene too
people go to a party to have fun, but they also PAY a expensive ticket that in the end support the scene (music artists, deco, etc)
About the labels (that they didnt get paid because they are not artists )
well i agree there is problems but i dont agree it fits in all cases
there are partys that the promoter close many artists from the same label, and looks like some sort of agreemnet that is good for labels too
again the hommega partys, it doesnt seen to be bad business to them
(and if they did this is probably because nowadays they see more chance to make money on this then waiting for people buy just cds)
of course in some cases there would be problems for labels. but the truth is we are living ina time of transformation and labels in general are facing problems, and public have a more direct contact to the artists, and its just not my falt, lol

if the scene here is big, with thousands of partys, big line-ups, artists making money, it happens in a big part because the big public. Cds sales here are almost insignificant.
the releases work almost as way of promoting the artists and to show what they are doing.
people hear that some artist is making some great sound, and he is booked. what is so bad with that

Well we all know that the future is not in cd sales anymore, better adjust to it.. Still sales will be but focus should be on other stuff, like organizing parties (label parties...).... A good way to show your label on the scene and if many parties, over many years : A legend is born
Too many possibilites, dont limit yourself!

If I toss the downloaded disc in the discard pile cos I'm not digging it, I don't care. no guilt.
If I fall in love with the disk, I buy myself a copy. If it's out of stock, I wish I could send the artist $10 for it.
So here's a suggestion to all artists: Open a myspace account to receive funds (or some other cheap way of receiving payment). You just might get some heads flowing funds your way as they're grooving to a track or cd they've just illegally downloaded. You may wake up in the morning and have some cash in your account to buy groceries or pay your cell phone bill. That beats waiting for a label to pay for a track you submitted a year ago isn't it?
