I can't belive everyone except ZilDoggo mentioned virtual synths. What's the point of having hardware synths if they are software based?
The greatest synths i tried is moog modulars for fatness....not so userfrienly though. The arp2600 is nice to use and great sounding. Oberheim 4 or 8 voice is a favorite as well.
Probably if I would get something new now it would be a studio electronics or doepher modular.
I was looking after a massive analog synth museum for some time, and had the opportunity to use a humongus setup CV'd to cubase. Great fun but I would not swap my pulsar card for any of the hardware I used....to much running around and patching etc...so glad the days of midi problems is gone
Does the Pulsar count as hardware....in that case I vote for that!
There isn't a hardware synth, virtual or not, that can give you envelopes and filters like the pulsar with the flexor plugs. AMEN |

Roland SH-101.
I just love the filter on this thing, great for basses. Plus it has some degree of charm you don't often find in the new synths.
After that I really like Waldorf's Q. Can really squeeze out some strange sounds from this little bugger. I like Waldorfs filters better than Clavia or Access too. |

Hehe
I dont really have a synth that i like the most. I like each of my synths in different ways. SH101 for it's simplicity and cool charater. ESQ-1 for a ultra cool and unique sounding filter. Virus for the gigantic spectrum of sounds you can get out of it.

Of coarse MC303 (jeje just kidding, but those could be the retro synths in 2013 huh?)
I like Nord Modular´s engine thru Waldorf´s analog filters, makes sound very warm.... |

Actually, my main synth is a Supernova II.
The second is the Waldorf XT.
But, the VirusC is the best synth I've already heard in my life, but I don't have it.
I've already had the Super Jupiter MKS-80 and this synth is a "fat and warm" monster. |

this thread wont go anywhere because everyone has diferent ideas (and some say the best synth is their synth... even if they only have a roland arranger keyb.. ) or something or a chetaa something)
but for ME the WALDORF XTk rules big time. and is cheap (and unsupported). beats any nords i've tested and most of the virus (just swith the virii FXs and check waht i mean).
Anyway... i would recomenfd the waldorf for full-on and psycheadelic leads (and rock, industiral, and anything grungy)
for progressive i won't comment

I can't in good faith claim to have a favorite hardware synth, because I am thoroughly tired of hardware and its [tiresome list of] limitations [which I won't bore you with.] My favorite hardware synth is the one I'm eBaying to get back some cash for more software. |
