sheyba is an exemple of excelletn sample job.Nuff said.
As for the worst sample.. there are too many uninteresting samples. Its up to each ones taste.I dont like to hear samples from new films like matrix.. because there are more than enuff of ppl sample the same.. so its really not that cool for me nothin too special.i prefer much older material which is hard to find and comes from other cultures sometimes.Like black and white films from polish 1950 productions I find killer tbh or just nothing too popular.
Last time I was sampling was from a movie in hindi.. nice it had subtitles hehe but that was a gooood choice for my liking.          https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Exactly....putting the obviously stupid samples aside, its not so much the sample source, but the choice of sample and also how it is used in the track that makes it good or bad. Sure south park samples are overused, but Shakta-Kick the Baby is still an old favorite of mine...likewise, Absolum-Drumatrix remix used a repetitive Matrix sample yet despite this, its an awesome track.

A well used sample should add something to an already good track...it shouldn't be too obvious... A poorly used sample is too often times the focus of an already bad track.

...just my thoughts

Also, I agree...that wizzy noise track you mention is a good example of a well used sample....

May I inquire as to why? Correct me if I'm assuming wrongly here, but is it because you feel they are overused or too obvious?

In my mind, a choice of sample isn't 'better' or 'worse' depending on how easily one may identify the source. Sometimes on the contrary I'd say it can really help set the stage for a tune with a bit of added 'visual' memory stimulation in lack of a better term.

I reckon most samples can be made to work if applied with finess and good taste - those movies you mention lend themselves very well to sampling as there's a lot of thought-provoking dialogue (ok, maybe not so much in fear & loathing haha) but you see where I'm going with this, not a fan of the generalisation.

Case in point, Wizzy Noise - Maniac Distortion.
Super track and a rather long and profund matrix sample ending with "without purpose, we would not exist"
Very tastefully applied and entire tune just breathes matrix in the choice of pads, leads etc almost as if they could've used in the movie soundtrack. Nice!

The worst sampling in my opinion are short proclamations that don't seem to have a context or possibly any real thought behind them (Psycho killaaaaaargh anyone?)

some horrible examples on this thread...BUT one artist that was not mentioned and is WAY worse than all of the above mentioned is Eyal Barkan with his infamous "good morning Israel" and the even worse "Micro-play".....

Micro-Play sample:

man:
"Yu Dafna ma kara lach?" ("hey Dafna what happened to you")

woman:
"ani mishtarlelet" ("im Mishtarlelet"= slang for slutty)

man:
"Mishtarlelet?!"

Woman:
"ken! echad shmishtolel. gam meturlal hu mishtarlel! ata rotze lhishtarlel iti?" ("yes! one that's wild. one being wild is also a Mishtarlel! do you want to "lehishtarlel" with me?)

man:
"lo" ("no")

woman:
"lama?" ("why?")

man:
"ki ani atzuv" ("cause im sad")

woman:
"ata yodea ma...bo nesachek bema yikre" ("you know what...let's play the "what will happen" game")

LMFAO!!!! yes people....those were the days!

NITZHONOT FOREVER!

well... i was about 16 years old back then and i really hope this kind of music was not played at parties... was it?! cuz i know if id be in a party id simply find a rock and bash the speakers if i heard that track

on another note it was aimed at kids so i guess it makes it ok eyal barkan was a little ahead of his time... look at skazi now

and yes nitzhonot does suck bad except for a very small number of tracks (some holymen tracks being among them )
