Hi,
I live in Carlsbad which a North San Diego County.
I'm from Bombay, India. I have been listning to psychedelic trance from last 6-7 years. It's been long that I have been to a psy party. Last I went to Westend, Goa which was like 5 months back. I really want some good scene, like why no djs come to LA. San Francisco is far away for me.
I appreciate the talent of barakuda from psytribe and their other resident djs but I really don't care. I want to see Bizzare Contact, Axaz, Stereomatic, Vibe Tribe etc ..
They all play in Mexico and leave.. while LA is just few hours away. This is not my demand list, all am trying to figure out they all come to Mexico and never come to near by place around. Seriously if you ask anyone in US, they all say its UNDERGROUND.
I really don't care if it's Official or Underground, for me the most important thing is Are the DJS platying PSY TRANCE? and yes THEN WHERE?
P.S - Sorry if am being rude or pissed, but I have been looking for one guys. I want to party, Psy is my fav and I'm tired of Electric Daisy Carnival and Monster Massive. I NEED PSY.
Edit: To add, I know psytribe is having a party on August, 15-16 but that's not my question. (Sirius Isness is playin in Vancouver !!!!!! ARGHH !!!!) |

I couldn't agree more with this...
This is the music that I play when I DJ at events; I love the melodic Full-On. I feel your pain, because I'd love to see these guys here on a regular basis. In an attempt to "make up for it" I try to present the newest and most innovative (to my ears that is) styles of Melodic Full-On from around the globe. Lately, the genre is splitting up a lot into a lot of distinctly different sounding sub sub genres that aren't even worth classifying separately since they all work together. But the point is, I'm at least somebody who is embracing and playing this music around here.
If you want, come check out ATOMIC FIELDS this Saturday 8/15. I will be playing at the party, as will many other local DJ's whom you never see on Psytribe's lineups. The party is only $5 as well. I posted info on the forum here, or you can go to (http://www.myspace.com/kahnthedj) for the flyer on my page. Yes, there won't be any big headliners, but you can at least jam out to their tunes on a kickass sound system.
I also play at many "RAVES" (I know the word is taboo around here, but tough shit ) in and around Southern California. If you use myspace (or even if you don't), check the myspace page I listed above regularly... I post flyers and all upcoming dates there. You're not going to necessarily get all psytrance at these parties, but you'll at least get myself and perhaps another DJ or two.
There is no reason why all this music cannot coexist with the local stuff in harmony.
I do have to say though, that lately Psytribe has done an exceptional job in getting headliners here. We recently had Earthling, Sesto Sento/Ferbi Boys, Poli, Joti Sidhu, and others. These are all top notch names in the genre, and it's great to see these guys playing around here.
The fault doesn't really lie on the organizers for not being able to bring these guys out here. Understand, that somebody like Bizzare Contact probably gets paid very well for his sets at MASSIVE festivals in South America. On the other hand, the local Psytrance parties that attract several hundred people at most (rarely or never at or above 1000) can't really support a budget to bring tons of these guys here. Already, it seems like the prices on Psytrance parties have gone through the roof over the past couple years. If we want to start getting these guys out here on a regular basis, then the number of people in attendance at Psytrance events needs to sharply increase. Every time it seems like that is going to happen, seems like "something" happens to stop the progress. But I will say that the rave scene (which is becoming HUGE in socal) is going nuts over the Psytrance. It's a huge untapped market of people who already like other types of electronic music, and the Psytrance is brand new to most of their ears. The huge festivals you named get little bits of psyish stuff (Christopher Lawrence, John OO Fleming, Inf. Mush if they still count ), but it's surprising that even people like Astrix haven't made an appearance at these parties. In large part, I think it's because the status quo in the dance music scene doesn't want to see the current top styles (euro trance, house, tech) get trampled by the obviously superior dance music, Psytrance. As most of us here on this forum know, once you go Psy, you rarely go back.
In short, if we want to get these guys here, something big has to happen. Either we need new organizers with huge financial backing. Or if the current organizers expand their promo and try to become world class electronic dance music festival organizers attracting huge crowds, things can change. The other hope is that the rave scene starts to embrace the Psytrance, pushing it out into the mainstream festivals instead of just the undergrounds.
As things stand now, we are VERY lucky here in Southern California to even get the people who we do get.
The big name doesn't always imply a "big" set. Sometimes a local DJ who has a good spectrum of new and modern music can be even better than the headliners themselves.

well first off man...
LA probably has the largest and most active psy scene in the US, in terms of event size and turnout.
Psytribe also brings thru just as many international names as SF, or most other places in the states. The one exception perhaps being NYC, but most everything there is in a club.
That being said
Psy in the US is underground, and will more or less always be. There are occasional events where more than a 1000 people will come but its rare. Its just not feasible really in terms of budget to ever book a show with more than 2 or 3 international level acts.
Also, this is the US. There are tough visa restrictions that keep probably 60% of those acts who might want to come out of the country. It is very hard for Isreali's, Russians, South Africans and Brazilian's to get visa's to come to the states. Those countries make up about a 2/3 of the main places psy producers reside..., so most often, when a overseas act comes, they are a EU resident.
and lastly... having been a "main line dj" for a while and having been to numerous overseas fest's, and seen countless acts like those you mentioned...
Most honestly are not worth the money. I would say again, well over 80% of the party's where a name international act is brought out, they are generally very disapointing , and are usually shown up and out classed many times over by all the domestic acts and DJ's.
You might not find a massive commercial festival sponsored by Red Bull here in the states with a lineup composed of globe trotting rocks stars, but you will find just as good a selection of music, intention, skills, vibe and dance floor energy as at something like that
p.s hey Psytribe give this guy a run down of all the names you've brought in the last year...its a pretty sizable list

I'm not psytribe, but in the last year they have brought...
Sesto Sento/Ferbi Boys (Itai Spector)
Earthling/Celli (Also a member of Soundaholix)
Poli (The brother of Riktam Matkin and Shanti Matkin (Krome Angels))
Riktam Matkin (as mentioned above) - this might have been NOizemakerz' doing though...
Plus others from other branches of psytrance.
Also in the last year Green Sector has brought us:
Deedrah (of Krome Angels, Transwave, etc.)
Antix/Fiord
Bluetech
and others...
We are still quite lucky here in LA. Though as I said above, I still agree with some of the stuff you had to say.
And X-NOize almost happened...

I suggest hanging around the forum, keep checking it occasionally. Somethings got to give
Also might be worth it to sign up for Psytribes mailing list. At least you can be in the loop on upcoming events.

Halloween is a Saturday this year if I am right. I'm personally hoping for a weekend long (48+hr) party at the La Jolla Indian Reservation that weekend.
That said, a couple weeks before on 10/17, mark your calendars and expect something else from another crew.

The REAL scene is...
a big happy family that enjoy jiggling and wiggling on the dancefloor! Music is top notch as my brother and partner in crime Paradigm said. There is an even mix of girls to guys and vibes are very healthy for your mind body and soul. With that said come on down to a party and get a taste for yourself. I'm sure my words here will not even compare to what you leave with and most of the time its a smile.
See you soon!

Psytribe is a great bunch of guys, with great vibes and spirit.....
Barakuda, Spyros and the other guys work hard and constant to bring great parties to LA.....
You should definitely not discount this group.
There is a ton of factors that go into deciding which artist to bring. it may just be that they can't get a VISA to come to this country if they are that close and never get booked in the country. You may have to make the trek down south to check them out....
assumption is the mother of all fuckups. |
