Okay, Roger Troutman (for those who may not recognise the name) is probably the greatest vocoder player ever (seriously talented dude). He was part of a US band called ZZAP!! who created loads of funk albums (late 1970's - early 80's I think) and appeared on the Tupac Shakur single - California Love.
Okay, so this ain't exactly psy trance, but I've yet to hear a better vocoder (I liked vocoder sounds from the mainstream dudes like Air, Daft Punk etc. but they sound limp compared to the Troutman sound).
So does anyone know which machine Roger used?
Thanks peepl |

It's not a vocoder, but a 'voice box'; basically a flexible plastic tube, one end of which is connected to a loudspeaker and the other end is held in the mouth. You play a lead sound or a guitar or whatever through the speaker, and make word-shapes (maybe actually pronouncing the hard sibillant syllables) with your mouth in front of a microphone, and what comes out is a combination of the two. Think of the the vocoder-style sound in 'California Love'; that's a voice-box.
Not a good idea if you've had lots of dental work done as the speaker needs to be fairly loud to work well!

Cheers Colin, I thought that maybe the effect was produced by a analogue synth with vocoder input or something similar. I don't fancy blasting loud soundwaves around my dentures, especially the raw soundwaves I make for psy tracks (I've also heard that the tube for the talkbox can push your teeth out of position over time, which is most definately, not good!
Thanks for the info dude. |

peter frampton uses the same thing. i'll add to the warning colin mentioned - the voice box is not for amatures. it can really hurt your teeth, mouth and gums. it vibrates with intensity in your mouth, and unless you can controll it well (or unless you have some Vibrator experience, in which case, don't bother reading this), it's gonna hurt like a bitch...

Okay, I'm convinced. Talkboxes are not for me . Thanks for the response dudes.
I gotta just ask, and don't take this wrong, what "Vibrator experience" would I need? I'm hoping it's not what I'm thinking it is!!! I mean, I'm willing to make sacrifices for my artform....... |
