so a friend of mine was asking.. what is psytrance? so I jokingly sent him to the encyclo dramatica entry and chuckled. but he responded enthusiastically with 'I like infected mushroom and shpongle a lot but I have never heard the term 'psytrance' before. I am curious'
so I am thinking, the dude needs a sampler made of different sub-genres of psy so he can get a taste of 'what is psytrance'
if you were to make said mix cd...
what artists would you include? I want a variety of sounds. any suggestions? |

It depends. Because you could be wanting to give him some sort of historical overview of the style. In that case you might want to give him more 'classics.' Myself on the other hand, if I was asked I would give them all the most modern sounding stuff that I'm listening to, even if a bit biased style wise. So this is what I would include. (And I would be giving an MP3 cd with 700mb of music or maybe several )
Give him:
Full-On:
Sesto Sento (stuff from their 'Come Together' and 'Key To the Universe' albums)
Cosmonet (Kronic Beats EP, his new album 'Are you Funky')
Cosmic Tone ('In Action Remixes' 2007)
Life Style ('Remixes' 2009, 'Make My Day' 2007)
Mojo
220volts
Perplex
Gataka
Shanti
XSI
Biotouch
Animalis
....
Also give them some of our local "heroes" like Openmind, Konflux, and many others.
Prog/Psytech:
Perfect Stranger, Antix/Fiord, Vibrasphere, Ace Ventura, FM Radio Gods, Ticon, Alterbreed, Rocky, Brisker and Magitman, Elay Lazutkin, Johnny K
As for other styles, commonly referred to by so many labels, and yet no labels at all... but loved by many of the psytrance "purists"... I fully admit ignorance on. Like I said, I enjoy the stuff by the local artists (such as Konflux), but I don't really know who would be considered "good" in terms of worldwide headliner people.

Give him an easy entry I would recommend:

Cosma (Very Recommended)
Vibrasphere
Liquid Soul
Rinkadink
Andromeda
Son Kite
Penta (kind of the darker side)

Quasi-chronological order so he can see how the style evolves
Juno Reactor - Feel The Universe
Hallucinogen - Snakey Shaker
Power Source - Skywalker
Infected Mushroom - Tommy The Bat
Spirallianz - One Way Ltd
Son Kite - Focus
Kin Dza Dza - Cristal Inside
Vibe Tribe - Rearranged
Suria - In Sirius Web
Logic Bomb - Sonic Algebra
Osom - Compos Mentis
Dickster & Burn-In-Noise - Tumbleweed
Psykovsky - Hellove Ja Wohl Yo
Vibrasphere vs Ticon - Dewdrops
I alternated night-day-night but you can seperate them into two seperate mixes if you want

I had an experience like that once , I was tring to explane what psytrance was for like 10 min. and then he asks "so is it like Inected Mushroom?"
All I could do was laugh...
Its a shame that thier fans dont even know what it is they like.
I would try to put a wide range of styles and years on that mix cd.
Start with some slow minimal Xdream and Delta
then move onto like Ticon and some Astrix or mabey Rastaliens, Cosmosis...
Going Israli sounding like GMS and Skazi throwin some TIP World tracks.
Then go full-on with some Wreaked Machines, and Chromatone, but end it raw and dark with some Para Halu, Bash, Mubali, Zero Blade, Blisargon Demogorgon I would refraine from going to dark as to not scare the neewbies.

My ex-girlfriend said she hated psytrance but had some infected mushroom burnt to her cd collection without knowing what it was.
She was a bitch, anyway.

ok I'll ease him in.
he goes to hippie fests. so he probably needs an easy entry.
I was gonna give him some Psykovsky, Somarobotics, maybe a cinderVOMIT set.
but that might be like violent butt sex without warning for the poor guy. |

Just take him to a festival. He'll be hooked even if he doesn't like the music |

..to clarify "PARA HALU" :: Pre-2008 tracks before they split up ... Adam's stuff is good, but def not the dark/deep style they were known for ...
some mixes to throw at em would be :
#1 just getting into the deeper style stuff, not too hard, but solid psy
http://forum.isratrance.com/kameleon-animated-spirit-dark-psy-trance-in-gel-form-feb-09/
#2 starts off with some full-on and goes all the way into some really heavy sh*t .. great for contrasting the styles , progressively getting harder

see... now thank you. there are sets that I actually have at my disposal. because I don't actually HAVE all of the other stuff to give him. =/
that's perfect. I was actually thinking of giving a bioluminescence or a kameleon and labyrinth set to begin with...
and one of yours sir dragon sir. hehe.
most of what I had in mind were local/N-Am. artists sets.
Kri, bioluminescence, dragon, wichdokta, cinderVOMIT, scorb

had many a friend that liked IM and Shpongle while living in Burlington, VT lol
hippie fests and all.
most would never even consider going farther than that though. I just played what I usually listen too kindzadza, psykovsky, shaman sound temple, furious, etc. and hoped for the best. for some they hated, some they were totally indifferent, others indifferent until one day when it just clicked and they loved it (ie. I dragged their asses to a party or two.)
done the cd thing b4 though: CD 1 =
A. goaish stuff -- goasia, mystery of the 13 skulls, old goa gil cd tracks (2 tracks)
B. only prog I really like - Vibrasphere (2 tracks)
C. full-on -- (see kahn's post above) (2/3 tracks)
D. night -- 1 track -- forest (derango), 1 track psykovsky/kindzadza style, 1 track fast cosmo / kashyyyk / ankur style
E. fill the rest of the cd with ur favorites.
Then... make them listen to the cd once or twice and report back.. they tell you which tracks they liked the best.. you make them a cd with the subgenres they enjoyed most. Voila!
then take them to a party. STAT!
