There is live, and then there is live! If you want to see a genuine live set, check out Meller, now that IS live. And as much as I hate to say it, simply because I really don't like his music, Skazi plays what I call a real live set as well.
My conclusion, there are people who play real live sets, their music is not always to my liking, and then there are artists who have everything lined up in Ableton and call it live, sometimes with damn good sound.
I do like your examples a lot dude. And I do believe that with a real live act, there comes more energy across the room, resulting in happier people.
One other note on that, if you really want to do a live set, you can do so even as a dj, as long as you really mix the hell out of it and apply some cool fx that to me can be live too.
Great post!!!

like. but not the same. do you use instruments like pop band? yes but it not make you pop band.
artist play his own music 2 hours even from cd is not dj set.
dj set mixing "the best of" many artists and any one can buy cds and claim himself to be one. |

I need to get a video of Primordial Ooze doing their live set, it's pretty cool. One of them plays the tracks and messes with the arrangement, the other adds effects.

I'd love to see more of what they do live..their set at gmsf2k7 was one of the most interesting and detailed sets I've ever seen..
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

and this is the distinction for me, and the one that should be maintained.. one that MAKES the music, vs. one that plays other peoples music. it just seems that LIVE has become the lingua franca for someone who plays their own original music. DJs certainly craft their own style based on the tracks they use and style of mixing , and this is an art as well. Some DJs use laptops to take it astep further, but they are still jockeying music that someone else went through alot of trouble to create
i honestly think that this discussion will only ever live in this kind of forum i.e. a producer's forum, because as Spindrift said, the majority of people go to a party to dance, and that is the important thing that people are dancing and having a good time, rather than nitpicking about how 'live' the set is.. but then again DJ's are pretty critical of other DJ's sets and style, and nitpick as well, so in our circle it becomes a fun discussion, and a way to share techniques, ideas, and compare live styles
that being said, it is sacriledge to have a perfectly working and beautiful synth on stage, but unconnected, and unrealized of its potential that it was created for. it is disrespect to the synth itself, in my mind
btw, cool vids SCM.. massive floor

I used to play with samples, inserting them on different part of different tracks, if you're really into it you can quite change the sound from the original track. Stuff like using 3 cdj's and just applying different sounds, you can make buildups and all kinds of things. So yes, you are using cdj's but you don't just let one track run and then gradually blend another in on beatsync, you can do a lot of crazy shit, and whenever the mood took me over the edge people would definitely pick up on it!
If you are a good dj, then using different parts of different sounds and successfully blending them together into something new is definitely a live act imho.
The Daleks, As far as the sacrilege is concerned I could not agree with you more.

This is basically true today, but thanks to the technologies available today I think that that distinction is starting to become questionable...and I could not agree less with that it would be a distinction that is desirable to maintain.
The DJ can be playing a bunch of sounds and loops on top of a section of kick and bass filtered out from someone else's track and make a completely new arrangement from that...in which case it is more live than someone having a pre-sequenced live set tweaking some knobs in real-time.

the kick from 1 track can fit quite well to the hihats from another track aswell as the bassline from the third track while the melody and leads from one track goes well with some elements from other tracks
