the latest versions of winamp play FLAC straight out of the box and you can also skip through the file and it does it in real time, no delays or anything...so overall I think it's a good alternative to mp3s and if you also look at the compression ratio I think it should very well be the next standard for digital distribution since it would cut down on server storage and bandwidth costs for an almost non existent quality loss...

I prefer wav too since it's more practical in many ways.
For example I play with Live and I don't like that my machine have to do a lot of decoding in the background since that takes up both HD and CPU time.
But when I buy music online it seems extremely stupid to transfer the files as wav.
With my 8 mbps ADSL I still save quite a lot of time on a download of an album if the shop have bothered to compress the files.
The thing is that FLAC can be used as it is, but you don't have to and you can simply see it as an alternative to zip but a lot faster and more efficient for audio.
The ability to preview without decompressing first is just a bonus.

I had a lot of corrupted wavs as well but I don't blame the format...the issue is data integrity.
Sure it would be nice if both flac and wav had parity bits to be able to recover data that has been lost in transfer or storage, but it would of course make the filesize bigger and I doubt it could be implemented to support streaming in that case.
At least shops should add sfv's so it's easy to confirm that the download is intact.

For the sound quality debate, what is it that you don't understand in Free Lossless Audio Codec? To a mathematical certainty, what you are hearing is EXACTLY the same as a .WAV file. That's the whole point of lossless compression - if there's a discernable difference, the problem is probably in your sound card/drivers. There was an issue with seek times, that has been solved with the newer implementations.
At the moment, from a sheer playback functionality point, FLAC and WAV files are the same, the same goes for quality, and FLAC gives you a 40% saving in disk space. What can you not like about that?
If you want to edit the files - I am not sure if .FLAC is supported, so converting to .WAV is a conservative and easy solution.

Get SongBird (http://getsongbird.com/) to play FLAC or pretty much any format you can think of.
SongBird is a cross, platform, open source media player. It is the "Firefox" of music players- and it runs on Windows, OS X and Linux. It is made by hackers and it designed to allow open music shopping and file format flexibility, rather than lock-in.
Although it is still in beta, I really support this project. Please check it out.
p.s. iTunes is the DEVIL. |

I use FLAC frontend (http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm) to decode my flac files to wavs.
I sort of like iTunes as a player, and it works well with my ipod, but i never purchase any content from their store.

I use Jetaudio for all my pc based music and you can rip and convert FLAC files easily. I have ripped a few cd's to FLAC but generally stick to 320 mp3's as they sound good enough to me. I've never done a blind test though
