I think if it has a key at all it is not dark... dark tends to have either no melody or melody that's completely random and dissonant

Hm. Not all melodies are cheesy and they don't need to be dissonant to be dark.

hahahahahahahahaha

darkpsy debate = centrailia, PA
darkpsy argument...centralia, PA what do they have in common?

when will we learn that darkpsy is the boogie man genre of psytrance. its only dark if it makes you feel like it is. and even then as spoken above and many times before that feeling is tailored only to you. ive had people say my music made them think i was like "someone who sits in their moms basement thinking up new ways to kill people" then ive also heard it called beautiful and pretty. so somewhere along the lines the term dark got taken from a descriptive word to describe a characteristic feeling of a song and was assumed to be a classification. Dark is like saying the song is emotional or energetic or confusing etc. that does not make it emotio-trance confusionpsy, or NRGPSY. the reason this cant be determined through all our endless posting is because we are trying to use science brains to figure out a question of opinion and wording.

the most hilarious thing to me is when people who like what others call darkpsy post and say "its not dark to me." therefore those people themselves are either just "DARK people" or there is no such thing as darkpsy. as well, people that make DARK music dont consider what they make dark. when i played an ambient song i made with me singing choir style vocals over top of myself its about 111bpm and no beat and is not glitchy.. to me it is very flowing and pretty..to my parents it is "spooky" "scary" etc.

so does that mean that its dark or not?

would you have to hear it for yourself so you can make a judgement as to answer that question? if thats the case then we could tally up all our answers and come to a good all-american democratic decision on what specific characteristics add up to make something dark or not. then in the future even if we dont feelm like something is dark but it has over 50% of the listed characteristics then we MUST consider it dark. This is how all classifications work. we ignore the reality of something so we can place an easy summation of its existence on it all to pacify our inability to control the part of our brains that are addicted to facts and "knowledge"

what if something has a fullon rolling bassline and DARK non-melodies and scratchy sounds and then later had pretty goa melodies but the intro was kinda proggy with a long psybreaks breakdown in the middle.... then what would you call it?

..or more importantly why would you need to call it anything other than the name of the project or artist or song. that is what it is called its genre is for you to organize the library of music and artist data in own your own head. if you want to use the concept of genre to help you figure out the phenomenon that is music thats fine. that doesnt mean need we need a term to simplify everything that speaks for everyone.

i saw a spare tire cover on a jeep that said "life is good" and also it said copyright...meaning some company owns the term LIFE IS GOOD! i just dont think its right for us to take words and try to make them something else therefore stealing its original meaning. dark is the absence of light. if you are in the woods at night time its usually pretty dark. why do iallow myself to get sucked into this like two putddles of mercury getting too close.

allow yourself to not "get it" (not my words or darkpsy i mean anything). sometimes the mystery is way more important than the understanding of it.

agreed with chuck..
creation/enjoyment of music is a completely different brain activity than classification of it..the obsession with genreficationaffiliphuckiation ((if im using the term correctly)) does no-one any good really, brings us collectively out of the 'trance' so to speak..it seems to become a justification for superiority, 'i know this so im better than those folks' which is the opposite of what these stomp gathering traditionally represent for a tribe: a coming together and a collective expression of the power of spirit..music and dance have the power to say so much more than any language [a collection of auditory symbols] could hope to convey

The funny thing is that a lot of people seem to have a definition of "dark psytrance" which is not the same as "psytrance which is dark"

Kind of how "hardtechno" is not the same thing as "techno which is hard"

It's a weird linguistic thing that amuses me

So here's how my head works:

When it's dark (in a dark room or at night), you see in mostly black and white because the light level is too low to activate the cone cells in your eyes which perceive color, and so only your rod cells are activated (which perceive light in monochrome)

So to me "dark" = "black and white", and I feel like most psy which I would describe as "dark" has less "colorful" sounds (= tones, melodies) and more "black and white" sounds (= scratchy noises, ambient echoey stuff, whispered voices)
