well then if delay is added to the left and right surround speakers it´s not fitting to call it a 5. something setup, since what we are dealing with is basically a dolby prologic approach to surround as i understand it from the description. If it is indeed just ye good olde dolby, we are talking about a glorified stereo setup basically. A more "true system features no phase trickery on the surround boxes but would only feature delay for the sake of aligning the boxes with the distance in between them to avoid the ever so loved ping ponging. Not saying it won´t sound good but there is surround and then there´s dolby prologic. What kind of encoder will you be using?

hehe..well check the festival page about shanti jatra and ask the organisers..
I´ll mix mine in stereo anyhow.. but
just to be an anoying viktigpetter.
5.something should be an ok description since the 5 indicates that five fullrange channels would be used and .something would indicate that .something speakers with restricted bandwith would be used, and would not define anything about it being a specific format except for that...

5.1 would mean there was only one sub channel and 5 fullrange channels.
I think most surround setups involve 4 fullrange each with their own sub but I might be wrong?

not really that either.. But I think the 4 fullrange speaker setup was popular in the 70s with the quad setup, 90 degrees between each speaker. Nowadays there´s a bunch of different formats and with alot of better imaging in.

This link is only for the geeks
and yes, it's all done b4, nothing new except the music !
I think the main reason here is to show that there are other ways to present music on the dance floor then the usual Mono/Stereo setups !
It will for sure take some time before we will have a standard of this presentation, since there are many ways to go.
Anyhow, who doesn't want to sync their trips with Surround sounds

using discrete channels and not a stereo to surround gizmo is surely preferable, so i hope this is the way it will be done. At any rate i am not attending this particular event due to being, well downright poor, so i will ofcourse be expecting some feedback from whoever goes. Surround is truly the way to go forward, provided people have the imagination to take it there. I for one want more stuff spinning around me and i especially think this form lends itself very well to more minimal controlled music where there really is space to play around. making music in surround and actually being able to play it is surely something i hope to realize at some point.

well said.. "just" need to afford those extra monitors to mix in first....
will be interesting to see if there in the future will come some sort of a standard surround for festivals and other events like that...

Well, first it would be nice with an International A/V standard
But I think it will come, time brings technology.
12 years ago i thought this was going to be standard for all production in sound. So far we got little beyond THX.

for sure would be..
Would be nice to get a fully compatibel surround with stereo. Think that is possible. Dont remember exactly, but I think you could actually do a really good stereo mix with ambisonics surround. aswell as doing the surround of course.. the reason I see that one would need to be able to reproduce it in stereo aswell would be for the cd-releases, since a surround format would take up pretty much space on a disk..and, I dont think the consumer market ever gonna adapt to buying several speakers..
but there are some really interesting things going on.. so hope for the best =)

You just need to different mixes

hehe, thats true, but, wouldn´t it be easier to have the possibilty to mix in surround and then just with an encoder be able to make a stereotrack of the same material.
Actually, this ambisonics stuff can do it.. if you know the elevation and rotation angle of each speaker during your surround mix you should be able to calculate that and transform it into a stereo pair instead, doesn´t that sound nice?

Yeah! Its a great step forwards, it will be very special i think ... But hope for more, hope work into a "standard" for the festivals, so artists can really learn how to use these new effects !! Tthis is almost a must if its a really big festival in 2009 and onwards....
Im looking forward grooving "into" one hehe
