Hi i wonder what gives the kick and bass it´s tight timing in psy trance?
Should the kick and bass be really short, have the same length?

Thanxs fore any advice!

play with the bass envelop.. and find a kick tht fits the best with it and u can also play with envelop of the kick. what ever sounds good is good.

I usually start with 1/32 note length on the bass and stretch it little bit more or less from the grid.. depends on which type of bassline u want to make.. there are lot of online tuts on bass lines, all of them are good.

Main thing is to find the right kick for the bass.

I think it is a good proccessing, unless you managed to do it in composition stage.

My advice is:Do your composition first and make it sound as tight as possible, then work kick and bass on mixing level.
I worked up this system : There is a plugin called Smecsoscope,it shows you the wave form of your channel in time, very usefull plugin.
Put it on bus channel of kick+bass and see how they work together. If kick goes into the bass ,you will see the bass starts before the kick ended.
You can use then transient shapers to shape your kick the way it ends just before the bass starts, and to work it till it sounds tight.
Then compress them together (which is not always good stuff, compressors are a wildd animal to tame),or just adjust the levels so they pick together on the same level more or less,so they ride good together. But this is just in case you actually want this to sound that way-because the most important is your composition idea and the way youn wanted them to relate to each other.
From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

The length of the note is important but I think the most dominant factor about timing with the kick is the bass frequency envelope, more specifically the atack. You need a lot of high frequency on the start of the note becouse the kick has a lot of high frequency at the start. For me this is one of the most difficult parts of creating a good prog bass. Also most synths are very unstable on this task making it even more difficult.

I use bazzism for my kick so I have control over it's lenth in ms perfectly

http://web.forret.com/tools/bpm_tempo.asp

than there I can look what the lenth in ms is up to the offbeat position of a bar, so my kick is about that length because the first bass note is the offbeat position(except for kbbb) and together with note lenth and env of the bass + sidechain kompression and maybe delay of the basstrack(some ms forth or back) I have what I want but still there is alot of improvement in this technique

oh and don't forget, bass and kick(the lowest freq of it) must be the same root frequency for instant rolling feel, at least this pushed me forward

The bass and kick should not overlap. Depending on the bpm of your track, this gets progressively more difficult with higher bpm. Kick and bass should therefor not be too long. I generally take a bassline, and then a kick and play with the kick until it fits. The bassline I put the amp envelope as short as possible, but enough to let the fundamental through. both of them get eq, comp and there you have it kbbb           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

also the shaping of transients, the attack of sounds should be well defined, wihtout mud ect that mask their clarity and impact.

I´ve noticed for sure that having the same length on
kick and bass makes the timing better. After this i use sidechaining and compressor.
And now how can i improve the sound and timing with eq?
I´ve equed down the harsh sounds in the bass and kick which has improved the sound a bit.

go by ears man, same lenght it dont mean much.. there is perfect kick bass with longuer kick than bass .

use eq to cut freqs you don t like, for timing you can try to align the bassline channel to play few millisecond early if needed ,but just setting right the synth might do the trick
