I mean, is it just another word for hard night oriented stuff? And what is "morning neuro"?

I'm not up on all the new genre names.

Genres are just the names we attach to music. They mutate and shift and vie for supremacy in our minds and cross-cultural dialogue. As it so happens, "darkpsy" became the de facto standard for referring to the style of Kindzadza, Xenomorph, Psykovsky, Penta, Derango, Parasense, and other artists making harder/faster night-time psychedelic trance. The problem is: not all of it is dark so the name doesn't really fit. There is, in fact, no small amount of variety between different artists under the umbrella of darkpsy as well as within individual artist discographies.

Several years ago this issue was brought to the forefront of discussions here on Isratrance but also on tribe.net, where the SF psychedelic community has maintained a strong presence. An alternative to the "darkpsy" nomenclature was seen as potentially useful for a variety of reasons; not only because some of what is written and released under that banner isn't really dark, but also (and here I am speculating) because cultural and artistic movements are catalysed by the transformation of applicable terminology. People saw a problem and naming a new (sub)genre title seemed like the way to address it. From this time I remember words like trauma, quantum, and neuro, but also "psycore" (something I've tried to popularize for the 160+ BPM set) and others. Ultimately, I think the goal was to differentiate the Alien Mentals of this world from the Silent Horrors, if you know what I mean.

So, what is "neurotrance" then? Consider the variety of "darkpsy" that focuses less on dread and terror and more on smashing your psyche to bits with lots of small sound particles. I think the Americas are ground zero for this approach; artists like Quasar, Ocelot, Alien Mental, and The Fractal Cowboys strike me as being at the heart of it. Anyone involved in the Vous Deux project might qualify, but as Mubali is an active member here I'll leave the final word on that to him. The term also seems to be in play amongst other American artists; I think I've seen guys like Dragon and Mukti use it in some context or another. Drop by the Chilluminati forum and you'll hear people talking about it now and then. The Bolivians also seem to be quite into the term, even appropriating it for "Neurotrance Records" which has a couple of releases out on my site (The Messengers and Andes Trip).

Remember, the map is not the territory. We use genres to think about music but a genre is by no means the defining characteristic of a piece of music. Whether a piece of music belongs to this or that genre is really a subjective matter. This is not to say that some level of consensus doesn't exist, but I just wanted to emphasize that these terms aren't set in stone--they mutate and evolve, just as music does.

The earlier Deja Vu releases broke so much ground.

I have a huge amount of respect for what that label did to push trance forward.

Neurotrance, as far as I know is a term used in the southern states (North Carolina, Georgia) etc.. and sorry to dissapoint basilisk, it means the same as dark psy or whatever you call what the freaks play at night...

They also refer to events as Doofs....

and Kane... if there were an emoticon for the finger, youŽd get it....           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Neurotrance is a euphemism for "Darkpsy" or "trauma trance"... trance that isn't classically psychedelic (in the Huxley, Hoffman, Leary sense..).. might not be dark.. just really fast and intense.. a difference genre and different vibe than Goa trance or Psychedelic Trance... night and day different.

I think "darkpsy" is a misnomer for 165 bpm speedcore... it's neither dark or particularly psychedelic to me... so I like the term "neurotrance"

I'm not putting down dark or night or whatever stuff, just all the labels and the need to categorize things. Actually, cats@play was one of the albums that got me to start producing. Sorry if that wasn't clear.           You believe in the users?
