am trying my hands at djing and the only thing i've been seeing evrywhere is there should be good mixing and a 'story' in a set...so what exactly is a story from low bpm to insanely hi bpm's or every track should be connected with the same flow or.....??
till then boom

Think of the flow of a good movie. Try to match that musically. You don't have 90 minute non-stop fight scenes for a reason....           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

I think it's best to tell legends and myths with you sets, especially legends. By the way, do you know that legend where Tamlin's Upside Out met Ace Ventura's Cardiac Arrest (Aerospace rmx) ?

Listen to a track you want to play...

What does it say to you??
What does it make you feel??

How do you think the track would work on the dancefloor??

Think of all the elements that make up a track and what they do...and what type of environment you want to create...

Then take another track .... listen to that...
How would this track elaborate upon and continue what you have started??

etc etc...

If you have appreciated a good dj set before... or listened to a well compiled VA or even read a decent book or watched a good movie you should know when a story feels like a story or whether it is a collection of loose fitting anecdotes....

personally i dont think Djs tell a story ... man come on are u serious he is not yelling frm the console telling u wat he knows ...

But on the other hand how a Dj plays his stuff shud sound like a proper story to a listener. like all things in nature have to have a balance , so does a Dj set.

90 minute fight scenes are possible brother ... just that for the Dj those might just be chill out

a 'story' or a 'journey' in a dj set is just going through a range of sounds and emotions, but doing it smoothly and to suit the crowd.

i think it's a hard thing to do at times, but it definitely makes a dj stand out from the crowd. make sure your set has a beginning and an end that make sense in the context of the whole, not just a 'killer' track at both ends.

for an idea of what a 'journey' is, get a hold of some old classic albums like cosma - simplicity, atmos' first album, s-range - 2001, stuff like that. these albums are a great journey from start to finish.

i also don't think a dj set should always flow from low energy to high energy - if you're doing a closing set you might want to make it more cruisey towards the end. if you're playing an opening set, you don't want to go *too* high towards the end because there will be hours of music afterwards to reach that high energy peak.

some random thoughts from me...

dwight.
