Those of you working in the Cube ~ do you start every project with a customized template or do you add tracks and vsti's as you need them? If you start with a template, what does it look like (how many audio, midi, group, etc.)
I'm hoping to consider other setups to help get the creative ideas moving. For me I feel better routing and more real-time jamming will help my tracks get moving.
Thanks!

i have a "template" file,
it has a Battery filled with beats,
and a VST for bass.
these are sidechained with Waves and a Group, the mixer is nicely laid out, hiding many of the Battery channels.
plus a Voxengo SPAN on the main output. |

I use a template to start with, but most to just save some time as it contains a lot of group channels, send channels and track folders routed in a certain way. Basically it has MIDI-channels for the kick (using a Battery2), the bass (squeeze'n'tweak from the beginning is fun!) and drums (also Battery2) - all added to a track folder I name as 'MIDI POWERED' (funny name, eh?).
Then I got track folders for 'Effects', 'Atmosphere', 'Sequences' and 'Loops'. Don't think I left someone out now. Besides these, I got one track folder for intro and one for the outro (the outro-folder makes less sense, but the intro-folder comes quite handy to hide a part of the track whom you most likely don't work with near as much as you do with the rest of the track). Track folders are one of my best friends, because I love to hide something I feel I am "done" with for the moment and what I see on the screen is mainly what I work with at the moment. No mess, clean space. My three MIDI-tracks with kick, bass and drums are the only ones that are visible the whole time - all tracks that I feel I am done with and pleased with for the moment are dragged and dropped into the related folder of the sound (FX-tweaks into the FX folder e.t.c.).
I use a lot of group channels to gain control over signals the way I like it before they are sent to the master output. Also if you work with a lot of audiotracks (like I do) it comes quite handy to route each audiosignal to a certain group folder for increasing the effectiveness when you are navigating the mixer. For example, if you have group channels for 'pads', 'fx', 'leads' e.t.c. you can quicker navigate your mixer by just looking at the top of each channel (where the track is routed to). It's not much, but it helps some and with spending limited amount of time in the studio like me I like to get the most out of my time.
Well I guess this generally is my template...

i always start from 0 cause i know what to do and doing it many times means improving hehe. in the end i have (beside the sidechains and more specific stuff) 5-7 group channels:
Low End, Percursion, Leads, Pads, FX, Vocals Guitars
i do this to make mixing easier (like you just have to put all the leads at the same level and then if you want to adjust the volume of the leads you don't have to adjust every channel) and to add reverbs (waves reverbs kill my cpu i can't use a lot) cause i don't like FX channels.
the templates i use are synth templates. example, one for vanguard where i have a reset patch and 2 MIDI channels (one with a melody the other with a long note, pad). it's from this templates that i generate patches. i also use them to create melodys.

Agreed 100%...
Every different track should have a different sensation and flavour which (I FEEL!) can only be brought about when starting from scratch.
Fact is also, that the more you repeat the easier things become!
If you start with the same bass vst and same drums each session... eventually you'll be to used to them to have courage enough to experiment with something new!...

I have a template with Kontakt 2, RM-IV, Reaktor 5 and Virus|powercore loaded, as well as 3 reverbs (short, medium, long), and 2 delays. The reverbs are placed on group tracks (so i can route them) with UAD-1 channel strips in the slot preceding them for hi-passing, other eq and early reflections (i do most hi-passing on multiple channels at once in group tracks, so i need to eq the signal going into my fx).
For most track-speeds i have my own reverb and delay presets that play in time and breathe with the track.
For the rest i make it up as i go along.
