I am a huge fan of son kite, and I can tell that many artists try to copy their sound but there is something that they do that makes their sound uncopyable.
I can only really describe it synaesthetically... their sound is kind of "matte", whereas other prog artists tend to have a more "shiny" "metallic" or "liquid" sound.
It's probably analog vs digital...
For example the synth around 6:00 in this track

There is an awful lot of prog that follows the Ace Ventura style. Then there is the prog that follows the new Digital Structures sound, which used to be the pinnacle label of progressive psychedelic trance.
Anything that deviates these two major influences, is something that strikes as unique.
Son Kite are doing their thing, which does not follow these two types of sound, and they were doing it before these two major influences came along.

You forgot the 3rd sound. The Iboga Sound.
I've always admired those who traveled their own ways
Correct me if I am wrong but the last few Iboga releases are quite techno (in the sense of typical clicky patterns and white noise bursts abundant...not that I don't like white noise) and also has the Ace Ventura sound, which I mentioned earlier.
Not judging on his music by the way, not his fault others are copying his sound.
I am not really keeping track with the prog scene nowdays to be honest so I am up for an update.

I always preferred Ticon, Atmos and Vibrasphere as far as Scando sound leaders.
But Son Kite had a few good tunes as well.

Very simple.
Feeling.. Emotions...
Not something that come across very often these days with the various prog-trance projects. Glossy production, but no soul in the music.

it's quite simple, in that time, earlier of first decade, progressive music is sounded like one official music style should. You had a lot of different projects with some of unique charm. Andromeda, Atmos, Son Kite, Ticon, Vibrasphere, Antix, Freq, Fitalic, Aerospace, etc... they all had something unique, something by that you can recognize that they are on stage, performing on festival. No matter of any kind of instruments they use. Many of named use software to create sound, I am shore.
Today!!! Today is a huge mess! Not just in progressive trance music, but will stick around that style on this topic. Today, when I am at festival, not just that I don't know when some artist finish with set and another start, but I it's impossible to distinguish even when one track ends and another begins.
Everything is totally same and same and all over again. Solo albums sound like single track, various compilations like solo albums, remixed tracks like... wait... what remixing I am talking about!?
Same bassline sound, pad sound, even melodies that you can find with more then one artist, not to mention in more then one track.
This is what today's progressive trance, and many other styles, missing that would be impressive and unique. At that time I never asked myself, why someone being copied. Every artist had their own formula which was special on their own way. This is something that I miss so much.
But look, if promoters consider that this kind of now days projects are good enough for bookings and to people good enough for listening, who cares, why change it....I mean, it would be tantamount to fighting windmills...

Yes nowadays prog should be called Vengeance Umpah music, cause many producers over use the Vengeance libraries, specially guys like Neelix and DayDin (among many others)... they have whole albums made with the same vocal snipets and one shot sounds... i do like some of the tracks but you hear one and you know how everything sounds.

People produce the same thing over and over because people wanna hear the same thing over and over... even if they say they don't.

Son Kite are true legends of the trance scene, when they released the album 'Minilogue' on Nova Tekk I knew something great was emerging from this small little town that we live in. A few years went by and they formed Digital Structures and later on released 'Perspectives Of...' and by the time this was released people were still discovering their first album and boy did they hit us hard. That album is still fucking amazing and brings back so many good memories from that time when we still had a kick-ass party scene in this small shitty town of 300k inhabitants. A lot of legendary tracks has been produced in High-Hat Studios, not to mention the melting pot of adding Ticon & Tegma in to the mix. Son Kite does have a very specific sound, if you listen to their other project Minilogue you will hear that they are also quite unique in this genre and are getting a lot of attention due to that.
I don't want to step on any toes but I will, the so called progresssive trance people releasing today are utterly worthless, The german beatport mafia topping the "psytrance" chart is a fucking joke it hurts my ears when I press the play button, mainly because they are not trying to sound special like people did in the beginning of the 00's.
Topping it off with some favourites, blasts from the past!
