psy = psychedelic

I find the chill out I like, for example Shpongle & Entheogenic very psychedelic.
About Cafe Del Mar stuff.. I like it too, but yes it's pretty commercial or not too "underground".. it's more like background cafe music.. not good for head phone travelling...

you could make a question.. what does full on have to do with psy? it's not psychedelic at all.. it's only made for stomping..

I hate categorizing music.. ambient (=ambience?) is more like soundscape "music".. you know like a cd that has rainforest sounds.. parrots and water and shit making noise.. it's athmospere music.. sometimes great chill out can have this element included.. for example check out the mystery of the yeti albums.. it really feels like Tibet or Himalayas or something like that doesn't it? or the space ship of imagination from tip records.. it's really alien somehow..
well I hope I made a point here..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

Brian Eno explained ambient in Music for Airports (basically the album that defined this music)thus:
"Whereas the various purveyors of canned music proceed from the basis of regularizing environments by blanketing their acoustic and atmospheric idiosyncracies, ambient music is intended to enhance these. Whereas conventional background music is produced by stripping away all sense of doubt and uncertainty (and thus all genuine interest) from the music, ambient music retains these qualities. And whereas their intention is to 'brighten' the environment by adding stimulus to it ... ambient music is intended to induce calm and a space to think. Ambient music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

This shows the difference but also the sameness between trance and ambient. Of course it also depends what trance and what ambience we're talking about.
And there's also the fact that most trance and ambient made today is electronic music.
