Go ahead and experiment all you want now in order to make something psy I figure that it has to have some kind of repeating musical/rhythmical line going on, because that is what in fact entrances the listener. As well as a bunch of trippy effects on top which trip the listener out In fact most if not all dance music is based around a repetative rhythm.
You could of course make something that does not have any repetition to it but then you would probably be venturing into the IDM territory of Venetian Snares and the likes

In my opinion i like to hear a bit of both !
My example:
Repetitive bass line and percussion with elaborate leads, it gives you alot of energy and you can travel with the complex melodies.
I like to converge those two concepts in order to create a sound that has got the Goa organic sound (Leads, fx) and the Psytrance energy! (Bass, Perc.)
