i must have asked this question hundreds of times in the last 4 years. never got a short straight answer for ordinary mortals.

the problem is very clear, i need to clean sound. i need to clean a speech or a nature scene. mostly it is because there is always the same surrouding sound or some surrounding wind. what do i do? is there anyone who can give me the answer in two words??? please??

what effect do i put on the audio sequence? is there something i could do per one click?

i work with adobe premiere for movies and if needed with adobe soundbooth. the effects are not so much but there are a few that might fit.

i am not a sound engineer and will never be and dont have the time to spend another year for learning this. it would be so much to know how to do this fast.

You can't make a bridge, if you aren't an engineer.
If you don't want to learn it, you have to get someone to do it for you.           -------------------------------------------------

She is not building a bridge. She just needs a quick way to get to the other side.
Not everybody is that guy from Craftsman commercial, which stopped by a river, whipped out a bunch of Craftsman power tools and built a bridge. She’s just a driver, trying to deliver a message (a recorded interview, in this case). She needs to know which button to push in order to open the gate on the road. Hardly a crime against humanity.

P.S. I tried it different ways in Ableton. By trial and error I found this strange method: use the vocoder with both the carrier and the modulator set to your recorded speech. Somehow, this works better than any EQing. Just need to play a bit with the vocoder's band setting (the frequency range and the number of bands). My hunch is that it works by boosting prominent frequencies and attenuating minor ones: kinda like having an EQ that automatically conforms to the character of its input. Am I anywhere close to truth?

thanks a lot for the answers.

okey, spectral analysis was a great hint.
it was one of the very few things i had not tried yet.
so here is a possible solution for those who have the same problem and are " overchallenged" with lowpass, highpass and compressors.

simply import the audio from adobe premiere into adobe soundbooth. then click on spectral analysis and find the problem graphically. then click on effect audio heal , mark the problem on the spectral analysis windows and reduce or change the frequencies. then heal sound. this was exactly the click i needed.) heal sound. ) i knew adobe has thought about people like me.

to the other issues: yes obviously having the right equiptment while recording the sound is more important than anything after that. and it is a science itself. would be great to know more about it too!! and as a matter of fact i always carry 20 kg of equipment with me if i do this for a paid customer. but it is not pleasent, believe me, to carry so much things every day, and most things happen spontaneously and are recorded experimentally so there is often problems with sound. especially i have problems with things i have recorded years ago with people who are some kind of legends and it would be nice to clear the sound and use it in a more serious way. because the picture itself is very serious in HD quality, only the sound is the problem.

and if there are people among you, who are interested to be part of such processes, you can feel free to contact me any time in berlin. i did not want to sound rude, i am sorry, just wanted to say that i am one person firm and i would be very thankfull for a direct hint or a link because learning new things takes me too much time and i need to spend more time with being productive and less time with learning .....

The best way to get clean sound is to record it properly in the first place. Say you do an interview with someone and there is a waterfall in the background, take another mic like the one you are recording with, hold it to the waterfall and away from the talker, record simultaneously, load both files into your daw, invert the noise file and run together. Voila, the noise is almost gone...

Cleaning up a sample after recording is always nore difficult, there was a similar thread to that recently...
Take the file, then apply a 2 pole hp filter at around 120 - 130hz, also pitch shift the file up a little (not too much, careful) then apply Waves Z noise! there are also other plugins that do a good job, Z noise is not your only option!
