Firstly Hi to everyone, Im new here!

I've been using Reason for some time now, and have had constant confusion as I love it to death but dont think it is capable of ultimately producing those high-end pro psytrance music. (though there is some very good stuff in it)

So my question is - is hardware necessary? Does it make a huge difference for psytrance. If not hardware then at least softsynths and cubase/sonar etc. ?

Also do you know what synths these pros use - silicon sound, ultravoice, protoculture?

What is the best synth for psytrance if I have to buy only 1, rack or keyboard.

thank you all very much!

First of all, having everything the pros have won't make you in their level, and may also harden it for you since you do not yet posses the knowledge needed to manipulate the advanced gear.

If you're a reason user, you'd be happy to know you can use reason within Cubase by using Rewire. This way you can combine your knowledge and slowly move to a move professional platform.

About synths, you don't really need one. Get a strong computer (AMD Athlon XP 2500+ or higher will do), a cheap control keyboard, and monitors. That would be a great starting point.

Keep tweaking with what you have. Squeeze every little thing you can out of that first. Don't worry too much about what the pros use. What they use, might not be what you yourself need. Find others around you that have hardware or software. Become friends with them and go experiment with there equipment. Plus you'll also get the advantage of learning from them as well as showing them things that they might not know. There is no need to go spending money right away anyhow. Wait until you have found what fits your situation first. But, I'll second that a good set of monitors are a must.           It's moving so fast, it's standing still.

yo all

well man i have the answer of this question:

i've spend a whole weekend with 3 masters of the trance production: pixel, domestic and panick.

i have the same doubts about it so i started asking about it and other several topics, during this time, they were the nicest guys, they helped me a lot, they even showed me how they made their stuff...

well man they dont use any hidden tricks or any kind of black magic to get the quality of sound that they usually have, they use almost all software that has beed reviewed on this forum (for my own surprise reason is not on the list)

but what they use in a huge quantity is their brain and a lot of time man, everything is about been smart and spend a lot of hours in front of your computer.

plz if you want to make music dont try to imitate the well known formulas, we had enuff of that man, even better, dont make a formula, make your music change every minute, make the ppl that is listening to you expect the unexpected....

you can get the basic programs almost every where (buying them is always the best option but can get a lot of demos and other stuff to try) if you get a computer with soundcard and monitors, and the time and love for making music you will reach the quality you want, and better

no pain no gain my friend...
boom!

one thing id like to add...
ry and make your whole track with what you have.. fr instamce Reason as a sequencer... write all your parts and sounds in it... Hardware is almost the same thing.. you just using the hardware sounds from it... so right the bass of your tracks .. and when the substance is really good.. you can always remix them later on with better quality sounds... but Cubase and Reason is a good forumla... a LOT of people are using it... its versitile.. you can Rewire and have your reason soudns as well as add on top Audio and Vst sounds... so its a hit combo.. for a fast computer
if you want pro synths.. hardware

Hi
Forget quality, forget production.

First you have to learn to make music. If you can do this it's time to think about the production.

All you need is a strong computer as mike said and a pair of good monitors.

Thats the important thing, your ears and good monitors.
Spend a lot for them.

Usually musicans first learn how to play an instrument and then learn how to make music.

In psytrance most people learn how to use their instrument, (the softw. etc, the production) and then, because it sounds fat never learn ho to make music.

Don't do it that way.           Most of my music for you to download at:

Hey Space Invader
I see you mentioned me so I'll give you a gear list that I'm using. I'm currently running Nuendo 2 (just upgraded from SX) on fairly medium spec PC, with a Darla card. a Waldorf XTK, Roland XV5050, a Freeform Technologies Freebase, A Steinberg Midiex 8, a Roland VS880 (mostly for live though), a mackie 16 channel desk, and a descent pair of monitors that were designed by some guy I know here in South Africa.
I must say, I don't use the hardware as much as I used to, cause I'm now running most of the Native Instruments plugins and a few select others. I've also gotta add though, that I've learnt over time that equipment does'nt really matter at all, it's just what you do with it that counts. I shouldn't say this but my forst release on Spiral Trax's Mechanism, was written in a day using only Fruity Loops and Acid !!!! (although the production was a bit shoddy) Anyway, food for thought. Hope this helps...

wow, nice to finally see someone else using nuendo for psytrance, most people look at me like i'm crazy

... also a very familiar sentiment... I dont believe hardware is essential for pro sounding psytrance these days. I think the biggest difference between "amateur" and "pro" material in most electronic genres is not really about the kit or sequencer used, it has mostly to do with the very difficult art of getting a clean, sharp, fat and well-balanced mixdown, coupled with pro mastering... just imho           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

i agree that the best thing when you are learning to make music (like everyone) is getting to the end of the tune..... and the equipment you use to achieve this goal is secondary....

it is all great writing loops, but that is a totally different art to putting everything together into a well thought-out tune with some kind of story....

i wish i had been in a guitar based band when i was a kid cos i think then that i would have understood this more quickly....

as to what hardware ppl use... i think everything that you can see in the shops is used by someone.... most commonly nord and virus..... and then waldorf stuff i guess.... but everyone is moving more and more to being software only with VSTis like the pro 53, discovery, albino, etc

What do the pros use???

The knowledge they have achieved with their experience, spending hours + hours in front of the computer/machines.

There are loads of bands doing really good stuff with quite a small studio...and loads of bands that have huge studios doing terrible stuff also, you have it all.

to contribute to the discussion hard vs software, i think there are two points to mention:

1. which kind of sound u like? if you like more the old-school, organic goa where there are lots of "chrunchy" 303, you'd be better off with hardware.
if you like more modern, more synthetic sound, you can go on with (almost) only software.
its like when you love the crackling of a vinyl, you dont listen to cds....

2. hardware gives you a more "real" feeling, especially when you have a live-approach in producing: when you want to record your knob-twisting-session and afterwards re-work it, its surely better to have hardware, cause u can use TWO fingers, and have this more live-feeling when sessioning...
i made this experience on my own: having only a pc with soft-synths, i was really enjoying that i can use both of my fingers - and having a much better feeling by touchin the knobs itself instead of klicking on mouse-button....

but i agree: ideas are much more important than equipment. USE THEM!

schlommo, i agree, its like putting your feeling into the sounds when you have your hands on the knobs/instruments. but a good hardware controler could also do good for vsti´s, but then you need a good soundcard to be able to work in low latencys..

i love my hardware, and im going for more... =D

OK we understand that it is not about what equipment you use , but what you put into it...
BUT there are still certain kinds of equipment that psy artists use that produce these beautiful basslines and amazing trippy sounds...

if you dont want to share them its cool... but dont sit here and pretend that you are giving advice on equipment when what you are doing is just saying things like
"the most important thing is what you do with it" or something like "spend a lot of time working on it"

obviously ..

the forum title is not... " what equipment will make music on its own and make me famous"
