Hi. This time i ask all people around about "your sound"... what is it that defines a style in psytrance. Is it the timber of certain VST / hardware unit? Is it composition trends / personal style? EQ & master?

maybe all of that, but what do you take into account when producing your own signature sound? i don't want magic tricks or recipes just want to know what can i think of to "define" mine.

i think it s mostly about arrangement and composition that define your style, not production cause most of us use the same gear (vst only or virus and nord)so everyone sound a bit the same as 50 others artists... but for sure some well apropriate analog gears ll make you sound like no one else .(analog synths, good preamps ,good analog desk for suming...)

i am afraid that more than 75% of psy producers have impersonal, common, indefinable style and sound

they can write whatever - everything will be true and at the same time everything will be bullshits

i think major parts of "self sound" are: method of composition, instruments and skill with these instruments

other significant parts are: musical background and musical "education"           http://www.surf10rec.net

When something defines ur sound u made something wrong producing psychedelic tracks

Keep it unique and never stop exploring...

...getting a specific sound is like giving up...            Signature

Nice comments here.

Well many of my favorite artist have a pretty defined sound, like Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, 1200, GMS, etc. And although i agree on the never stop exploring part there must be some stuff that define "your sound".

I'd go with the arrangement and composition theory, it also has to do with recursive sound use, maybe the way samples are chopped, maybe a bassline preset, maybe sum favorite chord progresions that make you say "hey isn't that a .INSERT ARTISTNAME. song?

Maybe everybody has a style even if they don't know it yet, the way you learned to use tools and the way you actually use them can define a lot of stuff.

I am thinking about all this because i don't know what to consider on my tracks, i don't wanna say "i'd like to sound like Cosmic tone or Indra" eventhough i have influences i must find my own way in origniality and style, u know what i mean?

this artists are great and do great music, but not the stuff i am talking about - i talk about so called 'underground' and u about 'mainstream'

like dennis said, it is all about psychedelic and if sounds become predictable it loses parts of its psychedelicness.

u know what i mean?

that is the reason why i rarly listen to an artists album in a row - can't stand the same sound for a complete if its not a great one            Signature

An artist with a well defined sound only requires 5 seconds playtime to be recognised, so I'd say in that sense composition has little to do with it. Mainly here I'm talking about Scorb, Prometheus, Ghreg on Earth, Jellyheadz just for a few examples.

These artists have a way of shaping sound from there kicks all the way up which just scream out their identity.

There's only 1 artists I can think of right now where composition has such an instantly distinct feel and that would be Tetrameth.

I'm a little biased with my opinions though as I've started to shy away from complex arrangement in trance, as a lot of artists seem to want to do too much within a certain amount of time which is like giving me a puzzle with a thousand identical pieces. As interestingly structured most trance is in comparison to a lot of other forms of modern music, it's very rare that I hear something with great purpose and meaning. More often than not it's just stream of conciousness. But that works in it's own way. hmm... my point doesnt read too clearly.

But yeah! Sound worlds all the way.

Hmm... got mislead by other posts.

What defines MY sound? I've been told it's like Dark psy with morning melodies... but I always figured "why does the night have to be moody?"

I'd say my sounds all about fine detailing the spectrum of emotions and not just labelling everything light or dark. Walking down the road while feeing smug is a good one

soulfood i loved your ideas thanks for having the moment to post all of this.

EYB, i recognize my influences are a little bit more commercial / mainstream but well that's what i knew about this genre in the firstplace but i also like other styles like prometheus, mr peculiar, oood, zen mechanics, etc... i understand all what you said about composition.

I want to create stuff with purpose and meaning just like that what you very rare hear. I've been learning now for a couple of years and i feel like the real road is just begining so now that i have an basic idea of every aspect in psyproduction and perhaps some method of my own i thought it would be a nice moment to sit and think about what i really want to do with all of this.

So now i don't know exactly what kind of emotions i'd like my style to be about... nightly? morningly? hard, soft, tripy, techno, dancy... I know for sure the things i like now, but don't know how to think about going into new places. Clearly i want to surprise people... that could be a nice way to start thinking about what to do and how. Any advice?

thx again for your comments...

the sound is defined by what you have inside your head           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

I tend to hone in on resonances that please my ears, which leads to most of my sounds having a "sound". So I would say "my sound" is definitely focused on an overall tone I go for in the individual and overall sounds I use to create any particular part in the music. I can see how this would lead my distinct style being immediately recognizable by others eventually.

Any sound that's dark without being noisy in any way..percussion and groove focused with ambient fx, instead of hard gated fx.

Whatever synth that will get me that, lol.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

thanks for the refreshing topic

I cannot define my own sound, and I don't think I ever plan to - it just happens automatically as I work... I blame the sequencer !           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...
