I do eq, no matter how good I get the sound from the synth, it still needs it. And I really try hard

thats the problem with synth that don t sit well in the mix , some just sit without any trouble and just a hp filter or light eq is enought for most sounds.. while some other need way more processing.

@ Pom...
that depends on what other sounds are present in the mix. I'd say that is what Colin is talking about, try to use sounds that fit on the mix, it's true, it will work better, even those will need equing, and it seems to me more so with ambient music than full on and dark.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

Put the eq before compression if you abase or cut off some freqs and put the eq after the compression if you shape them. Of course it is no dogma, it always depends on the sound you want to have. First I put some effects on bass like overdrive, quadrafuzz etc...Then I cut off everything lower than 30-40 hz. After that I make more silent some freqs, which overlay the main freqs of the kick. After that I put compression and an envelope shaper. I also like to use exciter to make the sound warm and fat. Than I send kick and bass to a group track and put on another compression. Beseides that I put voxengo max punch to the group track if I have the feeling there are no sub freqs. in the mix. And in the end I send the bass to a return track with some room.

really no rule in there..
it's mostly why you want to use a compressor in a specific mixer track.. then you know what should come first.

though my usual chain would be like this:

1. frequency fx /IF ANY/ (filters, modulators, flangers, chorus', etc)
2. EQ
3. Comp
4. time fx /IF ANY/ (delays, reverbs etc)

most of the times freq fx might come directly through the synth.
also i try not having time fx on the synth so i can avoid compressing delayed signals with the original one.
again, sometimes i don't even use compression.           extreme

you can also boost frequencies to control compression just for fun           http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

you can also cut before compression and boost after it, in fact i think all configuration can work and lead to a good result ,it depends the sound wanted. also sometimes i compress first then i eq the sound pre compression ,it s when i feel the sound need compression first, when their is a bigger improvment that will come from compression insteed of equing for a sound to sit right in the mix.

when recording with mic especialy vocals I first go to comp to tape, and than eq.When kick and bass eq lowcut often, comp and again eq.Mostly all over lowcut sometimes a few dips on all other channels.Hihats some ups in the higher area sometimes.Mostly all channels got lowcut apart of one without ..bass or kick..that depends.Sometimes both without lowcut buy marry them with a sidechain. Most others got sidechain aswell but lowcut before.I try to work on all whats possible with sidechain.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden
