I would like to understand better how it is that too often for my opinion tracks I work on sound quite dull when coming out of my monitors (Truth Behringer), yet if I check on my Pioneer headphones the sound is clear as can be.. Is it the combo of kick and bass that leave no headroom? Or what is it???

a lotta "dullness" coming from frequencies below 40hz in kick and bass tracks...           -----------------------------------------------

Nearly no monitor can handle freqs under 40hz. Ya need a sub and a suitable room.

Do it like most of the psytrance producers - simple cut everything below 40hz. Some are going even higher, but the "40hz-cut" is something you should remember!!!

I always A/B my tracks against reference tracks, i.e. released tracks with a production quality that I'd like to attain.

If you do that, do those tracks also sound dull?
Your monitors aren't top notch, but if you only notice this difference with your tracks then its not the monitoring equipment.

lack of experience

imho, good sound = listening experience (80%) + equipment (20%)

+ in your case your headhones color the sound very much i think, especially in mid and high freqs, a dull sound is lack of mids and highs in most cases...

if you upload a sample, people can tell more           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Start off with sounds that are not dull in order to have a reference to avoid putting in the arrangement, more dull sounds.

Your ears "adjust" to anything you hear long enough, thinking its good enough, only to find out in the end your starting point was way off what you thought was good before you started.

Just listen to a lot of good produced trance music to "learn" your room/speakers + train your ears. Then it will be easier for you to pick up on things before you finish a whole tune, only to find it sounds completely shite.
