So once in for all we know who were the gran dadies of the subgenre that some purists feel isnt dark as "darkpsy" should be.
For me personally i think it was Sandman/Cydonia who were responsible for the evolution of the dark sound that we have now. Because music like that isnt being produced anymore and sadly has been ruined by speedcore artists incorporating some of those elements parading around as darkpsy there is this portion on the darkpsy number line that is neither slow , eerie foreboding nor as fast and hard as furious osom etc. Some of them have made themselves distinct like kasykk, cosmo , osom , psykovsky under the speedcore genre while others around the 150 bpm mark could still to referred to as darkpsy.
Now the point is not to start another darkpsy thread here , but in order to have a little more clarity we could initiate a discussion about where the darkpsy roots lie to help understand how it was originally intended / what is has degenerated into + what really defines dark ; whether its the eerie foreboding atmospheres which doesn't necessarily need speed OR harder faster neuro core glitch madness which for some could be pure darkpsy to enjoyed in nocturnal settings but something that i personally would not like to call dark.
Discuss?

Probably not the oldest example and not necessarily dark, but I hear some of the same kind of tricks and effects also being used today by dark psy producers.
Good track from an outstanding compilation by the way.

Yes. Even it had its evolution.
As u said it was perhaps initiated by Sandman and the likes of Toi doi. Even some X-dream stuff was pretty dark in those days. Heck, even some of GMS older tracks around 95/96 were pretty dark!
Then i guess the ante was upped a little more by Parasense who according to me was the real beginning of modern night time music along with the likes of Droidsect, Neuromotor etc.
A real big twist in the story and probably the inventor of the horror approach came in courtesy of Xenomorph.

Not just Parasense, but Zolod personally. Deja Vu Fabrique, for example. Note that the "proper" darkpsy of Zolod is somewhat similar to modern "forest" trance (Atriohm is a good example, DoHm is another one) but has little to nothing in common with "horror" and "machine-gun" darkpsy varieties.
Ocelot is pretty close to the "proper" darkpsy too - but don't try to tell him that

If you ever check out Ishkur's guide to electronic music, you notice that there's this constant back and forth between sinister and feel good electronic music. I think psytrance is unique because it has a place for both, but the dark edginess goes back before it was even goa. It's a return to an earlier sinister acid house....and after all, goa was born from acid (house).
I think classic goa filled kind of a neutral space between edgy and feel good. I think it is only natural with the evolution of the music and the development of technology that it would develop across the spectrum.
If you really want to go back to the deeper roots, it's kind of related to the Merry Pranksters' acid tests and pranks. We are probably their truest inheritors, as we realize that psychedelia is more than just rainbows and fractals....that there is also the weird, spooky, and bizarre.....that there should be pranks that people learn from. To be cliche....
''that we might learn something that they don't know and that makes us a little out of their control''
Those of us who love our dark know how great it feels to get fucked by the music.......Party on!

Totally forgot about Xenomorph! that has probably got be the closest that one could get to the real source of the darkpsy bandwagon these days.
This fast modern sound running on the back of technology is probably more closely related to the parasenses and droidsects and has very little to do with the older generation of artists who seemed to have a real grip on the very nature of what encompasses dark.

I can bet my panties on that alot of the twisted scando sounds have their roots in the older aussie psy-harmonics and Demon Tea
Add 7 months of darkness every year and you have the formula

I would assume you got yourself the re-mastered version released on avatar in 2003 which gave it its dark avatar. now thats how modern production can be better used to make old music sound good instead of whats happening these days.
