One of the things most pads have in common is that they take up huge amounts of the frequency spectrum, going from very low (where your kick and bass live) to very high (where your hihats etc. live) and everywhere inbetween. This means that they're likely to interfere with almost every sound in the mix.
Unless... you use eq-cuts to make spaces in your pad-filled frequency spectrum for other instruments. It often helps to use a low- shelf filter to reduce the pad sound in the lows, a high-shelf filter to leave some space for your highs, and some cuts to leave room for leads, voices, fx, you name it
. Try not to use extreme q-values for your cuts, as this will tend to sound weird.
