i often find it difficult to get the pad sounds to sound as good as i would like in the mix. does anybody have any tips? i'm using sx3 and have some vst's. currently, i usually use my virus indigo, often with some additional vst fxs.
so....
what synths are you guys using, what fxs do you like to use on pads, do you have any favourite sound design techniques, reverb settings or whatever.

it really would be great to get some ideas from you guys

thank you

Hi there, sometimes it might be good to change the phase....Depending on where the sound is in the spectrum. Try to work more on the eqing.... Hard to say cause there is not enough info to go on.... hope this helps...

hi yes, maybe i was not clear.
i just thought it would be good to have some space where people could discuss pad sounds and techniques as this is something i find difficult to perfect.
what synths, fxs, etc, etc

i know this isn't very specific but it would be good to hear what other people think about making good pad sounds / parts

thanks

technomedics, are you talking about the acutal use and arrangement of pads in general or what types of synths/vsti's are good for pads and how to use them?

i'm trying to make better, more interesting pad sounds. any tips on synths / vsti's, how to effect the sounds to create good sounding pads would be cool.
i guess like most things its down to experimentation, but i'm interested in how other people create their sounds

i like the sidechaining idea, thanks for that. i'll give it go.

thanks

Gating the pads sounds great, to get that flickering feeling... try the gate in rob papens blue or albino 3... also a tremellow if used can give a similar effects..

technomedics:

You may try Korg Wavestation for pads. Both the hardware and software version sounds awesome.

check the synths from HG Fortune on http://www.hgf-synthesizer.de/ , pretty amazing stuff you can do with it, plus there are free versions which also do a great job

spectrasonic atmosphere is amazing for padz... also try FM8 and of course Absynth 3or4

i often use some reverb fx's on it if necessary (best way is to already set it in the synth...)

sidechainig is a interesting thing on the pads.. it makes it very groovy, but i always use several pads... that means: a deep one (sidechained) and a high one, that sounds far and clear

one of the main things i concentrate on my tunes is atmospherics... and in my opinion synths are nice, but what realy gets great atmos is sampling things, and the use of fx chains on stuff.

you can make a killer drone out of literaly anything. even from something trivial like a snare sample.

for example -
- take the snare
- put a huge reverb on it
- cut the initial attack snap of the snare
- apply downard pitchshifting
- cut everything below 400hz or so
- apply a phaser with very long lfo time and high feedback
- add a million more fx
- fade in/out

posibilites are endless... especially if you are doing non melodic based music and can experiment with the frequencies present in your drone.

For pads camel space is your friend
Really nice trancegates, instant super pads

Also sidechaining pads is nice as already said before.
And i like to make pads more spacy with a fat reverb like the uad realverb
