I love to see how off topic we can often go in this discussions...and how ignorance is revealing itself more and more...
ehm...the Pinks were a rock band just because they were using conventional rock instruments ?
so Aphex Twin is tekno just beacuse he uses computers and synths ?
and Cold Cut are hip hop because they use turntables ?

right....then I can say that is far more difficult for a producer to make a conventional rock band sounds like from outer space than for a computer boy loaded with sound banks and plug ins..
the producer using electric and acoustic instruments has to know how to use microphones and to use a lot of creativity and knowledge to shape an original sound....he starts from RAW material and from that is sculpting the sound....on their side the musicians need to have an original way of playing their instrument...and mix technic with soul...
while the digital boy is helped by the work of hundreds of other producers who did for him thousands of presets and libraries and tools ready to browse....putting boxes in many layers in the magic grid where is almost impossible to do mistakes...
but somehow the work of those producers in the early days of psychedelic and ambient electronica is still far more original and interesting still now than most of the modern high tek music...
I personally think that Sphongle music is ageing very fast and his older albums sound already outdated (I was also blown away at first...can't listen to them anymore).
and this is the problem with most of the modern electronic music...ageing fast...probably because "superficial"....
instead older BOC albums for example are still fresh to me...
a good producer for me is the one that creates an original and captivating global sound...without being the slave of his shiny tools...
how crystal clean and loud and fat is the final result is pointless....and mainly connected to how much money are involved into the production process...
all this blah blah about DUB in here...forgetting that DUB is born and done mainly in cheap studios full of second hand gear...by stoned producers pushing the levels to red and blowing off their monitor speakers....still their sound has so much more soul than all our expensive digipsydub...and we all trying hard to COPY and recreate it...           "There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain will never improve, and that's here." Amen.

PS:
illbient, at what i know, is comming from New York urban underground,
artists working around Skip Fernando from Wordsound rec, and peoples like Bill Laswell and Asphodel rec.

It mix hiphop, ambient, dub, psy rock, spoken words, middle-east trad music. and everything the composers whant make...

I can sujest a very good album from wordsound, EBN & SYNC http://wordsound.com/catalog/WSCD016.html

Of course if you dont like the Dark vibes, forget to understand this music,
its NOT AT ALL shiny, cheasy, popy, clean sound.
I guess very not in the tastes of the majority of our young chill freaks.

maux and margherita viva you!!!!!!!!!!!!

welcome to healthybient !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think also that people today still too much slaves of that crystal clean production.....
it arrives at the point i cant even talk with some people about the fundamental thing.....music.

they just think about hz...........then all organicity is lost..............................

sometimes(unfortunately)you only understand a thing if you lived it......and lots of people only woke to this 2 or 3 years ago

anyway illbient was not famous at all

after wards.....none of innovative music is accepted at the beginning...and in an age of terrible consumption...they dont want to have the work to understand or even try...they want it all done

the first concert cabaret voltaire did, they were harshly interrupted and invited to get out of the bar

this in early 70s

then you know the history.....

sometimes i find todays music (some)very boring even if its called psy...or avant garde

and in trance and chill out scene this happens even more times than i find elsewhere...

all they want is the virus the nord lead the live the bla bla bla to sound as their idols not as themselves....

before you had to dig hard to have a good sound

and maybe for that lots of old music (boc included)sounds more NATURAL and less PRETENTIOUS......

PEACE .....GABI

Here you go. Solid album. Worth checking out. Grittier than Dead Dreamer.

Never picked up Riddim Warfare for some reason. Going to have to revisit that. Good track.

Pink Floyd's level of production IS below shpongle. I love pink floyd, they hold a special place in my heart and always will. but WTF how can you even put these two bands on the same level? shpongle is light years and galaxies ahead of pink floyd. the first time i heard shpongle i was blown away at how tight, crazy, psychedelic, and original their studio production is. Pink floyd is a rock band: guitar drums bass vocals.

30 years ago, yes, they were the pinnacle of psychedelic music and themselves, visionaries. Today, they are no longer the forefront of psychedelic music.

why do you even bother listening to new music when you think that all the greatest songs have already been written?

Hahaha, Spongle better than Pink Floyd, I definitely disagree on that. They were not really just a rockband, I remember some very sweet synth sounds in there... Not to mention the ultraclean guitar... yeah, I know that you are a Spongle fan, it seems that Spongle fans always are very fanatic about S.P. Being the best there is... I personally always find a lack of flow in his tracks, and yeah, his production IS very good, but not the best. I say Pink Floyd wins that contest with ease...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

not saying that one is "better" than the other...i just don't like the stagnant mentality that people get in when saying something older is superior to something new on that criteria alone.

pink floyd kicks ass, but I bet Beatles fans think that floyd can't compare to the beatles. and the beatles can't compare to Miles Davis who can't compare to Stravinsky who can't compare to Tchaikovsky who can't compare to Beethoven and so on and so forth

everything is built on what came before, and to deny that is ignorant, but it is also ignorant to think that Shpongle hasn't pushed musical boundaries farther than pink floyd
