A new flavour from Backroom Beats has been created.

Beautiful production and chilled out grooves, featuring the fantastic voice of 'The Duchess'

Western Rebel Alliance has nothing to do with Star Wars as many people seem to think, but is a collection of artists from the West of England.

Jules Evans, Ronnie Biggs and Joel Chinn provide the programming and the instrumentals, with the ethereal vocals of Paula Crawford aka 'The Duchess' being produced by Jules Evans (Muki, Underwolves) and Professor Stretch (Underwolves) who have between them worked with artists such as Simply Red, Mark Morrison, DMX, 50 Cent and Sugababes. We can safely say that these guys know how to produce a record.

Western Rebel Alliance, renowned for their deep space non-invasive character, used to release incredible chill out tracks through the now extinct Flying Rhino Records. Hypnotic, gorgeous guitar melodies would wobble out of a black hole, give you a quiet kiss on the ear lobe and evaporate as peacefully as they came. Interstellar whales would float past uttering their solemn cries. However it still fitted quite nicely into the genre of psychedelic ambient music. However, this album is harder to classify.

Zero 7 meets Morcheeba with a touch of psychedelia.

Style: Ambient

Released: Sep. 2006/37

Well Twisted have've finally got around to releasing it! Heres a review I did for Upfront magazine...

------

“Western Rebel Alliance” - Western Rebel Alliance (Twisted)

A bit of an oddity here... Some of you may recall Western Rebel Alliance from their deep ambient tracks on the archetypal, but sadly long gone, English psy label Flying Rhino Records. Some of those tracks resurface in one form or another on this album. But be warned this is album has very very different feel to it. There are… shock horror... vocals on the album ... and lots of them, and the words aren’t about weird alien trippy sh*t either, but er... love and relationships... girly stuff! And it sounds a bit jazzy! The most lazy, obvious but accurate comparison would be Morcheeba. It does seem like the previous young hippies have given up on slumming it round festivals, cuts their dreads and moved into somewhere urban and hip and now chill in groovy bars rather than chai stalls. Worryingly enough – I really like the album! If you’re after psychedelia, I’d go elsewhere, but if you want a fun breezy summer album, then you could do far worse than the Western Rebel Alliance.

Definitely have to check out this one.

Tracks that were released for FR were amazing. Too bad that they didnt release more of their music.
I'm not a fan of "urban hip lounge Morcheebish jazzy (which is not jazz)" music, but anyway, will def. take time to check the album.

All the best.           *********

Well this one was finally released on the twisted website just late enough that everyone had forgotten about it & no longer wanted it. I got it 6 months ago when it was released in Japan & at the time I was so excited. I had really been looking forward to this one after hearing a lot of good tunes on the old flying rhino comps.
Overall I think this album is quite good. I'm not dissapointed because I knew it was never going to live up to what I wanted. But I just feel like if they had put more effort into this and made a few decisions differently that this could have been fantastic and a contender for album of the year. It just seems a bit lazy, 2 previously released tracks and 1 which is basically a previously track, shortened and vocalised. The 6 new tracks (at least new to me) are all very varied and apart from the too jazzy 'crazy' & the annoying 'spaniard I do like them in there way.
Although they are varied they still flow together quite well. My main dissapointment was the length. The tracks get progressively longer throughout the album but the last and longest track is still under 7 minutes and being only 9 tracks the album is just 52 minutes in length. Having put 3 old tracks on the album I wish they put Slewake on it too as that is my favourite Western Rebel Alliance track ever and one of my favourite all time tracks too.

So it's a decent album but it could easily have been a lot better.

Anybody else heard this yet?
The album consists of 9 tracks, (i believe) 6 of which contain (imo) really annoying singing..described as "ethereal" and declared a "new style".
I think the first and second tracks of the album (Feeling Blue, So Strange), would've been ok to have vocals in..but this album gets on my nerves anywhere after track 3..
Sad thing was this was one of the only albums that I was dying for and couldn't wait to get..
What do you think?

well.to be honest i'm a bit disappointed fromt he come back of western rebel alliance..i didn't like all these female vocals..too cheesy for me..

Music may not take us to the Moon or let us live forever, but as we enter trough the doors it is opening before us, we find things far beyond our everyday experiences..

I'd say I'm open minded to new music..but the vocal style is just pushing it too far..another thing is just that its the same style of singing in every track..which isn't a good style to overuse..maybe..idk

I quite like the way they've gone against expectations and not just done more of the same - there's enough swooshy twinkly plinky with deep bass and ethno sample CD vocals stuff out there to last a lifetime - so good luck to them..

I found myself playing this loads over the summer - but maybe it is a summer album?
