Hi guys,
most of the time when I upload something to Soundcloud , the encryption puts a weird ringing noise over the kicks which sound perfectly fine in WAV or MP3. But when I listen to a lot of tracks being posted by others in the workshop, there is no ringing at all.
So I wonder, what do you guys do to post stuff on Soundcloud and avoid the ringing? I have tried various things, like making it quieter, but it is still a game of chances, most of the times its there, but then sometimes it isn`t.
Any ideas?

Ive had similar problems myself. To be honest, I don't know what causes it either. Would like to know. Anybody? Soundcloud compresses audio in some manner when you upload, but I can't expound on specifics.

They convert the quality of the uploaded songs to 128kb thats why you hear that annoying sound to the kicks .
But its only applied to the uploaded song on the website, if you download it. it will be you original quality.

I think it's aliasing and the ones where it isn't happening have more lowpass on the kicks. |

i also think it has something to do with aliasing, i had the same problem, and if you listen to your track in soundforge even in wav youll hear the same ringing, i havent been able to solve the problem i think it might be the built in soundcard working at 48000 and the programs running at 44100, another thing ive been noticing is that people using cubase have that ringing sound aswell, but im not sure, so if anyone is using logic or ableton or whatever and have the same ringing sound please post here.
i made a track using ableton and then did the mix in cubase, the ableton mixdowns didnt ring, the ones in cubase did, (after uploading to soundcloud and listening in sounforge).

Its not a soundcloud problem nor a hardware problem, the ringing you are hearing comes from a not so good mixing. Kick and bass frequencies are overlapping, either shorten the kick so it wont hit when the bass note plays or compress the bass so it wont over power the kick. Usually if you shorten the kick your problems will be solved. Try cutting the kick freq at 50hz also.

yes that can be one problem and another possibility is that you are rendering your track at a high volume. Try to render ur track around -3-4db and then upload it and check.
let me know if it helps |

I've had the same problem with a bunch of my tracks as well. Especially earlier ones. I definitely also think it's a mixing-problem, but I'm not too sure that it necessarily has something to do with the bassline.
With me it'll typically appear when the mix is quite busy, and it seems to be happening in the mid/top end of the spectrum.

it has absolutely nothing to do with the mixing, ive heard tracks from guys at phonokol that have the same ringing. its definitely aliasing, it doesnt help at all reducing to -4db. |

I have the same problem.
I wondered more than once without getting right answer..
I have devoted many hours to fix this problem, I have no solution but here you have some results...
-The volume has NOTHING to do
-The quality of audio ( Hz or Bits ) isn't the problem
-The DAW (Cubase , Live, Samplitude, FL ) isn't the problem
-Soundcloud have some compressor or similar, ALL audios sounds a little different, in some you get the "Weird ringing noise"
-I tested with Kicks made by me from zero and with Sample Kicks, ALL kicks made by me have the "Weird ringing noise" when i heard on soundcloud/Myspace but the Sample Kicks don't.. Some sample kicks sounds clean, has to do with some of the frequencies..
-I tried to cut some freqs ( -40Hz ...etc ) in some cases I have been able to improve the sample, but DO NOT delete the noise in Soundcloud... only improved.
If anyone has the definitive solution I would like to know it.
I just put my music in gogear.. will not hear that noise garbage.
( Gogear only supports Mp3 files but are 99'9% identical to original file )
Honestly, I always wonder why people keep uploading music to soundcloud / Myspace..
If there is a page to upload paints but they will see pixelated / destroyed of the original, you think that some genius hang his paintings? |

I had the same problem and I have to agree with Grevinsky...Tracks are converted in to 128kb which is pretty shity quality so no wonder that kick sounds like you applied metalizer |

Thanks for the replies, so it seems no one has a defnite answer...all I can say is it also doesnt have anything to do with busy mixes, I get the ringing the most on very exposed parts, like just kicks and nothing else, or just kicks and a bassline...and I always use sampled kicks, I never make my own...
Anyways, its damn frustrating, I wish they would use better than 128 kbps, you spend all this time trying to get the perfect mix, and then it sounds like shit on Soundcloud. Like on here people know about this and no one in the workshop forum says "fix your kicks, they are ringing", but when I post my tracks on Facebook I get that reaction from my friends all the time, and all I can say is "Just download the damn thing, then the ringing is gone...!"

It's nonsense to say it has to do with the mixing. It's quite simple. If the mix sound good after being bounced from Cubase or whatever program you use then It got nothing to do with the mixing
Actually I had the same problem (But when using Cubase etc.) and found out it had to do with the USB connection from my soundcard (M-Audio Fast Track Pro) to the computer. I changed the cable and the problem was fixed. Now I am not sure you use a external soundcard. But if you do replace the USB cable and/or use another USB port (Changing USB port can also fix the problem - don't know why though).
But in your case I am pretty sure it's a problem created during upload. Are you uploading mp3's or wav? Try uploading a wav next time
