old fans make a harsh grinding and grating sound when they turn off. as they spin down the pieces touch each other instead of being in the air.
its most likely CPU or Video card Fan
according to his post i saw no mention of sound coming from speakers ... if it comes from computer then its 99% fan |

I had the same problem with two different fans. Neither of them is old or had any problems. Both are silent and quite expensive fans.

maybe he has cheap fans.
ive had this problem with 2 CPU fans, and one dying silent Video fan.
listen to the fan, if the noise comes from it, replace the fan ASAP
jus tryin to help |

Thanx for the info guys. It's indeed an Audiophile 2496. I thought it sounded really un healthy. like a DAC that's tortured by static electricity from my computer screens. I hope it doesn't degrade the sound-chip after 100x turning off my comp. |

It won't. There are DC blocking capacitors before the DAC. I believe the M-Audio engineers thought it all out.

my pc does the saem noise... sounds like a fart... 
not sure it's in the delta 44 or the alesis mk2... but surelly is disturbing
