You should aware more about that rather your cheap monitors.
http://www.worldmagblog.com/blog/archives/011485.html
Anyway it can harm both, since magnetic fields meet each other, I think 3-4m is far enough but in your case i wouldn't let such friends to come in with phone. "there once was a lesbian from Cancun
who took a young man up to her room
where there argued all night as to who had the right
to do what, how much and to whom" |

Great question! I've been wondering the same thing. Well from now on cellphones are banned from being to close to my monitors. I wouldn't wanna hurt those babies |

Don't think you should worry about your monitors! It is just EM interference - Probably being picked up by the cables. It won't be very powerfull and so has no chance whatsoever of damaging your monitors. It will just make an annoying sound.
Are you using balanced cables? I've never experienced this problem on my monitors using balanced cables but it happens all the time to my hi-fi which does not use balanced cables.
Personally I'd be more worried about it doing something to the PC! (although this is still unlikely) This is the reason that they ban cellphones on planes. |

it's also a problem that is disappearing, gsm's opperate at different frequencies now, frequencies that are less and less disturbing to other material, it's only a question of time and gsm's won't be distorting sound or images anymore (a screen starts 'waving' if an old gsm goes off close to it). Problem is that every freq is in use, and the best freq's are used by the army... So they are always waiting untill the army deprecates one of it's frequencies so they can use it for cellphones... |

cell phone harmonics won't do any damage at all to monitors.
concerning the recording, the cell phone must not be near cable connections or microphone.

The sounds created by a mobile phone close to speakers is purely electromagnetic interference. It will not damage your monitors if they are just hooked up straight into your amp or soundcard.
The reason it begins to sound before the phone rings is because the phone recieves the signal while the connection is being made... it's the same with text messages.
As sex-stile said, the only problem is volume... but it would have to be exceptionally loud to damage it.

do you guys have some sort of clue where _exactly_ the noise is made? would be interesting to me too.
- in the cables
- in the electronics |
