I noticed that many of you use L2,C1,C4,...How about the "non-limiters/compressors/maximizerz" effects.Do you use them at all?I know that many pros and not pros claim that the dynamics effects from Waves are the BEST but what about the others?

REQ is pretty much the only EQ I use as I find it warm yet accurate, and MetaFlanger is my first port of call for modulation effects as it's so flexible. Now that tempo-sync has been introduced in version 5 I can see myself using SuperTap more than I already do... and the S1, M/S Matrix and Linear Phase EQs are a permanent part of my mastering chain. RVerb is the smoothest and most realistic-sounding non-convolving reverb in my opinion, and is well complemented by Trueverb which I use for special effects and emulating mechanical reverbs.
If I was only allowed to use one single plug-in package, there's no doubt I'd choose Waves.

I am a big fan of the RBass. I usually use it on my basslines that seem to be lacking. I have heard many people using the enigma. I like the reverb plugins and I feel that the restoration package (X-Noise, X-Hum, X-Crackle) are incredibly awesome for cleaning up dirty audio.

X-Noise... X-Noize... THAT'S where those guys got their artist name! Hee hee! I knew it sounded familiar... great tracks from those guys...
Anyway, how's the new Waves v5? Any new modules or noticible improvements? There was some discussion on the L3 here a while ago but I'm curious about the rest of the new package...

Enigma and metaflanger are the most usual tools in almost any track i working on- a lot of things to play with and settings to change- very fun and still simple

I wish I even understood where/when to use the L3 (or L1 and L2 for that matter).
Is this something more for mastering, or would I expect to use it as an effect or treatment of an individual element?
I've read the manual, and things like "The Waves L1 and L2 Ultramaximizers staged a revolution in digital limiting and re-quantizing for mastering and other applications" does little to help my understanding.
Could you put, in layman's terms, why you find the L3 'wow'? For example, I might describe a delay unit as "something to add a spacey quality, or maybe accentuate a groove" - in other words some context/examples of how/when to use the L3. Feel free to use small words (if it can even be explained in such).
Thanks man!

You can use it to level individual tracks. Sometimes you make synthlines and you get 'spikes' and resonant peaks in the signal. I often use a limiter or compressor to tame the signal and get some more gain. A multiband limiter like the L3 can be used to limit resonant peaks in yur signal and leave the rest of the freq-range of the signal relatively unaltered. |
