This weekend I taught myself how to use Waves LinMB and im quite impressed! Heres the technique I learned from tutorials, etc:
1. play ur track all the way through
2. the numbers at the bottom show the peaks for the bands. Enter those peaks into the corresponding thresholds
3. Move the global Threshold so that the orange bar "dances" around the middle of the blue section. Then you play with Attack and Release and wow, great results imo.
My questions are this:
What is attenuation exactly doing?
How do you know visually, how far to pull up the global attack and release? I read you should pull it so tha the first 2 bands look "stable" and horizontal. Is this true?

driving a car just by reading the manual without getting some driving lessons first would hardly get you anywhere (maybe hospital). not the best example, but you'll get the idea.

1. attenuation is another name for gain reduction.
2. depended attack and release settings are depended on the audio metrial itself and the effect you wanna get.

I dont know why ur implying that I simply read and then got instant magic. I learned and played with the sound for many hours.
My settings could still be improved obviously but I achieved a much better sound than without having devices in the main output chain. Also, OBVIOUSLY the attack and decay is dependent on the material. DUH. My question is, for the current material, how do go about deciding what the right levels are? And graphically, what you should look for "relatively". Obviously there are methodologies that exist and its not 100% by ear.
I want to add that I got good results by having this type of chain:
1. Renaissance Compressor with Trim settings
2. LinMB as discussed above
3. L2 Limiter
Is it true that if you generally compress first, and use the multiband and a solid mixdown, the limiter isnt going to squash ur sound too much since the LinMB is intelligently compressing the spikes? |

first, sorry for mistaken you as a newbie dude, but your description was too visual.
second, if you want to make good use of visual feedback, then instead of 'play ur track all the way through' just scroll to the highest peak in the waveform and play that part.
