Hi guys,
i have some tracks i received by a friend, he told me it was WAV, real WAV.
But after playing them with spectrum analyzer, i realized that they cliped.
And now i don't know what to think, they are WAV, or mp3 converted to WAV?
Is there a method to know if it is wav or mp3?
Thanks,
Eduard

hi!
the fact that the tracks clip dont have anything to do with the fact that the format
is wav or mp3.
it could be that your freind exported them whyle in the mixing process they were still clipping...
if you do look though on an analyzer you will
see usualy that the wav file consists 20hz
to 20khz frequencies, whyle the mp3 will band
pass from 60hz to 16khz.
besides the format is writen on the file itself.... |

Seconded. To avoid this set your output level correct or use a limiter in the master signal chain.

its no way to check it, but just as extra info...the mp3 file will not consist these
bands thought to its data reduction methods
thats what i meant. |

I was curious about that learning more of that limitations too. Yesterday I made a spectral analysis of an mp3 (16/44.1 stereo 128kbps) - the high frequency was cut off at 15 khz, just like you said. Alltho according to this information it couldve contained a higher bandwith http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/amm/techinf/layer3/
But they consider 96kbps near CD quality - bolloks IMO as this reduction would cutoff even listenable frequencies of adults.
Then I converted another mp3 (16/44.1 stereo at 192kbps)which shows frequencies up to 22.050 Hz. So, the higher the compression ratio the less bandwith you'll have.
Hey, but don't ask me to explain. |

Thanks all for advice, i did some tests as Username did.
It is true that if you use a spectral analyzer, the mp3 sourced files will show a cut in the frequencies. More compression means more frequencies cutted.
Thanks.
