I was thinking about buying an access virus, or getting a DSP card and buying a virus plug in.

Unfortunatel, I know next to nothing when it comes to DSP, I've tried to research them but everything I find makes them seem more ambiguous.

So, if I wanted to get a VST version of the virus, what DSP would I need to get, and what keys, and plugins do I also need? And what are the different variations, and what are the advantages.

I've heard that the actual hardsynth virus has a VST plugin that can be used without a DSP, is this true?

Thanks

If you think of getting a TC powercore, better go for a pci-ehttp://www.tcelectronic.com/powercoreexpress.asp, has a 500$ voucher really great, i think they have better latency than the external series, except the X8 which is double the power of the others having 8 DSPs instead of 4 http://www.tcelectronic.com/powercorex8.asp

The Virus for powercore is based upon the Virus B not TI or C (its better to have in mind), so it doesnt have the extra possibilities, like some more fx, filter emulations etc , for more check here
http://accessmusic.de/comparisonchart.php4

They released a newer version of Virus which is supposed to be fixed with bugs that existed in the past, im going to test asap , just saw it and really excited about this

Plus with the powercore DSP you get 14 plugins for free, some of them are really really nice http://www.tcelectronic.com/powercore3.asp , ie the TC01 , Filtroid, Mega Verb, Classic Verb

If you get a voucher, thing of buying one of the System 6000 Algorithms http://www.tcelectronic.com/system6000algorithms_powercore.asp especially the VSS3, its probably one of the best reverb plugin on the market

About the DSP's on the synth and the card, they are the same processors from Motorola, the Virus TI has the usb and a vst plugin to integrate with the sequencer plus the endless pleasure to tweak the sound and the hardware feeling (i bet that when it comes to programming sounds though most of the people use the plugin, cause the interface and especially the modulation matrix is much more easier to program on the plug, instead of virus submenus on the little screen )

im going to test the new virus asap, my suggestion is go for the powecore, you save money, youll have the sound of virus and more useful plugins, make a small research first

So its like a 1500 value for 1000. I was hoping it would be in the 500 range but I might be able to do it.

Also do all the dsp vsts use iLok? and how annoying is it to deal with? especially when trying out demos?

But isn't it true that with the virus TI you get a VST controller of sorts? I saw something like it on youtube...

EDIT:
To add on, what do I get when I get the mkII? Does it come with the virus plug in? or do I have to use my 500$ voucher on that?

There is no demos mate, you need the Powercore card OR the Virus Ti synth thats the "ILok"           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

" Virus PowerCore for Windows Demo 1.0.4
THIS DEMO VERSION DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT A TC POWERCORE DSP CARD

Virus PowerCore For Windows Demo. This demo version requires PowerCore drivers 1.9 or higher. PowerCore drivers are available on the TC website.

This demo is fully functional apart from the following limitations:
· The demo version stop working after a couple of minutes
· The demo version is 6 voice polyphonic
· Save patches has been disabled
· Host and controller automation is disabled.
· The audio Inputs of the demo version are disabled"

I'm not quite sure what you mean?

check very well for bugs known to the pc parts you have. I got the powercore with the virus and its been nothing but trouble. Don't use the virus poco at all at the moment. Which really is a waste of 500 euro's. Check second hand for poco's with virus. They should be widely available because there have been a bunch of updates on the poco and i think the virus was discontinued. But i might be wrong here.
Personally i would go for a second hand virus C or B unless you want the vst option than try the snow or ti.

Well I'm going off to college, so I am leaning more towards the DSP since it is smaller.

My current setup is:

AMD 4600+
ASUS m2n4 sli motherboard
2gb Corsair ram
Windows XP SP3

But i was thinking of upgrading soon.

And my laptop is an Asus M50v:
Vista 32bit
C2D P8400
4gb generic ram

And im guessing from this:
http://www.access-music.de/products.php4?product=viruspowercore

That my 500 voucher will go towards that? And will I still get the 14 plugins for free?

What are the differences between the TI and the B, is the B a stripped down version or something?

Also how is the sound quality/range of sounds that can be made with the powercore to the TI.

Also, how many patches are available for the powercore, and can normal virus patches be used with it?

I came across that chart after I posted that, sorry.

I also came across these:
http://community.sonikmatter.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t19159.html

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/rap-hip-hop-engineering-production/372359-access-virus-powercore-worth.html

Wich give very mixed reviews, one says it sounds exactly like the B, the other says it sounds thin and to save up for a TI...

And I gathered that it could load B patches, but not any TI or C patches..

There are three main DSP solutions, from TS (Powercore), Focusrite (Liquidmix) and UAD (UAD-2). Each one does some things better than the others.

Powercore is a powerful all-around solution, it has everything available. It does everything well and is considered the best in phasers / flangers / chorus effects as well as having the reverbs/delays that made the Virus series such a hit.

UAD on the other hand has what are considered the best compressors and EQs - the compressor plugins are on par with >$1000 hardware. The solutions may be expensive compared to others, but quality is pricey.

Liquidmix is different than the other two by offering a complete mixing/mastering solution, with the ability to emulate different compressors and EQs for different bands. By far the most flexible solution, with this you will never lack for mixing needs.

There are other solutions, but these are the main three you should consider. None of these offer reverbs or delays that are considered the best non-external offerings. If you think you'll never buy another DSP solution, Powercore is the clear solution. If you're considering at a certain point buying more hardware and other DSP solutions, UAD is the best at the two most important effects, and you will keep using it for years. Liquidmix is sweet if you want to buy external synths/FX and/or use your sequencer basically for recording, scoring and mixing but aren't really interested in much else running internally (and is considered an awesome way to get that rich record-like feel to a mix).

There are far more detailed reviews out there, but that's it in a nutshell. All these don't come cheap, so you better be thinking ahead before buying them.

Important fact: people who have all three usually use the UAD the most.          http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222
