Hi all!
what do you think about this desktop to start my music production?
prices are in american dollars, including tax)
-Motherboard: INTEL D946GZISSL OEM (CORE2 DUO) $110.-
-CPU: Intel CORE 2 DUO E4400 2.0 GHZ 2MB 775 $200.-
-HD: Seagate 7200 rpm, 250 GB $90.-
-RAM: 1 Gb 667 Kingston $50.- I'll buy 2, $100.- total
-CD/DVD burner: LG $40.-
-Monitor: 17" flat Viewsonic or LG $190.-
- Keyboard+mouse+cabinet: $75.-
TOTAL: US$805.- tax included.
Now I'd have US$1000-1200 to spend in speakers, controller and soundcard. I can start playing and learning with headphones, so i'll just consider controller and soundcard to start producing.. i'll save more money and then I'd buy the speakers.
Let me know what you think about it!
Thanks in advance |

i would not go for that motherboard i prefer something with 965 or p35 intel chipset!
for cpu i would again prefer something like e6420!
the hd is fine
ram i would again prefer something with 800mhz it would make the system faster and afcourse 2g!
monitor i would again prefer something in 19 or more inches they are very cheap these days and ur eyes will appreciate it!
also get a good psu at least with 500w and silent fan !

Hey, i'm so newbie.. what do you mean with 965 or p35 Intel chipset? and why do you preffer that?
About the CPU, why the e6420? it's 2.13 Ghz, only 0.13 more than the one i mentioned.. or are there more differences?
Thanks! |

I agree go for a motherboard with a p965 chipset (just check the description). p965 is more modern and also enables you to put a quadcore, later if you wish..
and i also agree on the cpu go for the e6420, its a little more expensive, but you got faster FSB and more cache.
for the ram. my experience is that it didn't really change a lot in my system when i upgraded to the 800mhz.. if its only little difference go for it, but if it's big i wouldnt. I understand you will put 2gb, thats fine.
keyboard and mouse seems a little expensive.. but what is cabinet? the furniture? you don't have a table?
the CPU price seems a bit high.. for 200bugs i get the 6420 here.

Hi! ok with the motherboard and CPU, understood.
I didn't know how to translate the spanish word "gabinete" to english.. now I know it's "PSU", the body and power supply of the PC. That's why the price..it wasn't only for the mouse+keyboard. The psu itself costs $58.-
Regarding the price of CPU, and almost any other imported electronic appliance bought in Chile, things are more expensive here than in Europe or USA.. that's one of the costs of living here, though i like my country
Thanks for your inputs, keep them coming!

there is a case (gabinete) and there's a
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuente_de_alimentación PSU (=power supply unit) inside of it. regular gabinete comes with a PSU inside, in Israel a good case costs ~60$, But a good one - has no PSU (it is more tight, silent, higher quality )
a good PSU is silent, and "powerfull" - 450 Watt or so, and can cost ~80-100$.
Another good thing in p965 pro is:
1. it has SATA II slots, which a good throughput.
2. you get 9 slots for SATA-II disks, which is important if you work with real instruments, synths & modules.
in P965 pro you will need a graphic card. go for the one with cooling static body, without a fan. fan == noise! |

So, should I buy the case and the PSU separately? that increases the budget... and it was already increased with the cpu and motherboard you've recommended.
Does it really woth buying them for separate?
And, If I go for the P965, why should I buy a graphic card? doesn't this motherboard come with one already?
Thanks! |

Great.. you guys are being very helpful!!
If I buy the p965, which graphic card would you recommend? considering one with no fan (as Bilbobagginz said) and not very expensive...
thanks |

Ok, but I think i'm going to use XP, not Vista... since Vista seems not to be 100% ready to use with audio and it uses a lot of resources.. what do you think |
