Hi.
First post, so, hi there!
Ive been listening to electronic music, mostly trance and chill-out for the last ten years. Now, finally, I wanna create some sounds of my own.
I wanna make chillout music for mind, body and soul. Love stuff like huva network, distant system, solar fields, aes dana, bluetech, ott, shpongle etc etc. Im mostly a noob. Started to learn synthesis one month ago, struggling to get the sounds I want. Been reading and reading, tweaking and tweaking. Guess thats all part of the process.
What I wonder is if some of you can push me in the right direction. I wonder if there are any good tutorials for creating sounds used in this kind of music. Also, Im also really unsure about what synthesis methods are good for what sounds. Like, can I use subtractive synthesis to create bright, bubbly, quelchy sounds? If so, how? Ive tried to get the sounds that are in my head out for weeks now, but I just cant seem to break the code.
Anyway, hope to get some good feed-back to drive me forward in my quest for those sounds.
Peace... |

I think that you can use any synth you like....
When i want to make atmospheric sounds or just make them with ome space i put Reverb and delay on the sounds...
you can either make Sends so you can use them on any sound you like or you can make groups and make wierd FX combinations on them....
try this on the drums except for the kick, but it can be nice with a little reverb and delay on the bass.. try and work with less bass hits....
Experiment is always the best and most fun way IMO
Good luck

I Think that you just should create sounds.. sounds that makes you calm and chilled out...
Get some books on sound design... read up and practise...
its nothing wrong in using presets.... try and learn what each parameters do.. for some cool evolving sounds its nice to automate some parameters to get some motion in the sounds...

This might be a shot in the dark, but do any of you know of similar forums that focus mainly on the psy-chill genre? I have come to love this forum and all the help and advice given, but I would really like to see some tutorials and more help for psy-chill. |

I really don't think you need tutorials to make psy chill. It's supposed to be very free form and mostly based on harmonics. It's not like making trance music or anything that has a common track structure across the genre.
Make some cool sounds and put them together in a way that chills you out. That's all you should focus on imo.

To get started I would recommend to open a new project, plug a couple of Atmosphere's or UltraFocus'es, or other big sample-based synth, then choose several pad presets and start to explore notes, harmonies and how do they work together and how do they affect the overall "chill" feel, and so on. Don't stick to how the sounds sound on their own, but pay attention to how they intersect and help each other.
For relatively "static" sounds, such as pads and noises, i always use these big sample-based synths, just because they usually sound better than VSTi, and you also can tweak the hell out of them with fx.
Then plug NI Battery and make several rhytmic loops.
Basicly, you will need two kind of sample packs for drums - one for general stuff (kick, snare, hi-hat, cymbal), and other for ethnic percussions.
Then plug a reverb and send every channel to it. =) kidding, but for chillout you will need a lot of reverb indeed.
I usually use 3 or 4 different reverbs in each track (one for drums, one short reverb, one long one, and one extra )
For any kind of electronic music you will probably need a bassline. Trilogy is a good plug-in to start from. For general sub-bass you can start from simple sine wave, then add something to it...
Hope these random words help, good luck

i dont kno what technical expertise you could profit from exactly, but i do kno that whenever i make a chill song i listen to some classical music before and it really seems to help me
